About the Punjabi Language

Punjabi is unusual: the same language is written in two different scripts depending on which side of the India-Pakistan border the document comes from. Indian Punjabi uses Gurmukhi; Pakistani Punjabi uses Shahmukhi, a Perso-Arabic variant. For US clients this matters because USCIS and state courts need translations matched to the source script. The Punjabi-speaking community in the United States is roughly 300,000 strong, with major centres in California's Central Valley (Yuba City, Fresno, Stockton), Queens, Houston, and the Seattle area, much of it Sikh, with strong gurdwara and community-document translation needs alongside the standard civil paperwork.

  • Primary regions: Punjab regions of India and Pakistan, with significant Punjabi communities in California, New York, Washington and Texas
  • Language origin / family: Indo-European, Indo-Aryan language family
  • Estimated speakers: Around 150 million speakers worldwide
