Prism Linguistics provides certified Punjabi document translation for USCIS in both Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi script, and Punjabi interpreters for court hearings, medical appointments and immigration interviews in Indianapolis and across the United States, matched to whether the speaker is from Indian or Pakistani Punjab.
Prism Linguistics provides qualified Punjabi translators in Indianapolis and professional Punjabi interpreters for the courts, hospitals, attorneys and USCIS offices that serve Indianapolis's Punjabi-speaking families, with certified translation of Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi documents.
Indianapolis and Marion County have shared a consolidated government since Unigov took effect in 1970. The Marion Circuit Court hears civil matters and criminal cases alongside the Marion Superior Court, whose divisions cover criminal, civil, family, probate and juvenile work, while nine elected township small claims courts, in Center, Decatur, Franklin, Lawrence, Perry, Pike, Warren, Washington and Wayne townships, take the smallest civil disputes.
Indianapolis holds the largest Burmese population in the United States, settled mainly on the Southside and predominantly Chin, with Zomi, Hakha Chin and Karen congregations each using a different tongue. Since autumn 2024 Perry Township Schools has taught a Chin heritage language course in Hakha Chin at both of its high schools, run with the Chin Community of Indiana. Courts and attorneys come to Prism for Hakha Chin, Zomi and Karen, which most providers cannot supply, and for USCIS filings. Our only office is in New York, and in-person work goes to a linguist near Indianapolis.
Certified Punjabi translation in Indianapolis starts with the paperwork most Indian Punjab families bring: the Anand Karaj marriage certificate from the gurdwara with its civil registration, Punjab School Education Board results, a tehsil land record (jamabandi) for an asset affidavit, and a police clearance from the district superintendent. Each certified Punjabi translation is signed by a Gurmukhi-reading translator with a Certificate of Translation Accuracy.
Punjabi translation for USCIS in Indianapolis is heaviest in three filings: the I-130 for parents and spouses, the I-485 with its birth and marriage evidence, and the N-400 where a name changed at marriage or on the passport. A Gurmukhi certificate handwritten by a village registrar is translated line by line, empty fields marked as blank, and our immigration document translation carries the certification USCIS asks for.
Punjabi court document translation in Indianapolis comes mainly from family and property matters: a divorce decree from a Punjab family court, a mutual consent petition, a will or a partition suit over farmland, and a power of attorney executed before an Indian notary. Indian courts write the judgment in English but the exhibits in Gurmukhi, so our legal translation services handle the mixed file as one.
Certified Punjabi to English translation is most of our Punjabi translation work: municipal corporation and gram panchayat birth certificates, marriage certificates, school and university records and Non-Availability of Birth Certificates, read by a Punjabi translator in the original script and delivered with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy.
One language, two scripts, two sets of paperwork. Punjabi from India is written in Gurmukhi; Punjabi from Pakistan is written in Shahmukhi, a Perso-Arabic script, and most readers of one cannot read the other. Indian Punjab records are what we translate as Punjabi: the birth certificate is often a bilingual form with the entries handwritten in Gurmukhi, and the Non-Availability of Birth Certificate, which the Punjab government issues when no birth was registered, goes to USCIS with affidavits from relatives. Pakistani Punjab is different: NADRA and Union Council certificates there are issued in Urdu, so a Punjabi speaker from Pakistan usually needs an Urdu translation, not a Punjabi one.
Names are the recurring snag. Singh and Kaur sit in the middle of most Sikh names, sometimes treated as a surname and sometimes not, and Gurmukhi given names romanise several ways: Harpreet and Harprit, Gurdeep and Gurdip. We spell to match the passport and note the variant on the original, because a Punjabi translator who standardises a name creates the mismatch the officer will ask about.
Every certified Punjabi translation is a complete, word-for-word rendering with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy, prepared to meet USCIS requirements. It is done from a clear scan, so a client in Indianapolis gets the same translator, the same price and the same turnaround as one anywhere else in the country. Prism Linguistics supplies professional Punjabi interpreters in Indianapolis for court hearings, depositions, medical appointments and USCIS interviews, in person, by phone or by video, assigned by whether the speaker is from Indian or Pakistani Punjab.
Our Punjabi interpreters in Indianapolis are experienced, professional linguists who work in state courts, hospitals, law firms and USCIS field offices, matched to the credential a court expects and to the Punjabi the speaker grew up with.
California certifies Punjabi court interpreters and has too few. About 316,000 people speak Punjabi at home on 2021 ACS figures, and California holds by far the largest community, concentrated in the Central Valley. The state certifies court interpreters in Punjabi (India) through a written exam and the Bilingual Interpreting Exam; it funded a court interpreter workforce pilot with 6.8 million dollars from the 2023 Budget Act, and of 1,114 applicants by August 2024 only 2.2 percent were fluent in Punjabi. Where a California judge expects a certified Punjabi interpreter, tell us the court and case type and we match that credential; outside California most courts use a registered or otherwise qualified Punjabi interpreter.
Indian or Pakistani Punjabi? Ask before you book. The spoken language is shared, but vocabulary, formal register and script differ, and a Pakistani Punjabi speaker may be more comfortable in Urdu for anything official. The people who need a Punjabi interpreter are the older generation: grandparents in a hospital, a parent at a green card interview, a farm worker giving a deposition whose English covers the job and not the witness box. Any hospital that takes federal funding must provide a Punjabi interpreter at no cost. At USCIS we send a neutral Punjabi interpreter briefed not to add, soften or explain.
For an in-person assignment in Indianapolis we assign a Punjabi interpreter based in or near the city. Telephone and video interpreting can usually be arranged the same day. We serve courts, attorneys, hospitals, USCIS applicants and private individuals; we are a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor, and we say so up front.
Punjabi is unusual: the same language is written in two different scripts depending on which side of the India-Pakistan border the document comes from. Indian Punjabi uses Gurmukhi; Pakistani Punjabi uses Shahmukhi, a Perso-Arabic variant. For US clients this matters because USCIS and state courts need translations matched to the source script. The Punjabi-speaking community in the United States is roughly 300,000 strong, with major centres in California's Central Valley (Yuba City, Fresno, Stockton), Queens, Houston, and the Seattle area, much of it Sikh, with strong gurdwara and community-document translation needs alongside the standard civil paperwork.
Punjabi translators and Punjabi interpreters from our nationwide network cover Indianapolis and the surrounding area, so a certified translation or an in-person assignment is arranged the same way in every city below.
Our only office is in New York. For in-person work in Indianapolis we assign a Punjabi translator who is based in or near the city, and the same Punjabi linguists cover the surrounding area:

Yes. We assign a Punjabi translator who reads Shahmukhi, the Perso-Arabic script used in Pakistan, rather than a Gurmukhi reader. Note that official Pakistani certificates from NADRA or a Union Council are issued in Urdu, so if that is what you hold you need an Urdu translation, and we will tell you which when you send the scan.
Yes. Punjabi (India) is one of the spoken languages in which California certifies court interpreters, through a written exam and the Bilingual Interpreting Exam, and the state has publicly reported a shortage of them. Tell us the court and the case type and we match the credential the judge expects. We are a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor.
No. Our only office is in New York. Punjabi translation is done remotely from a scan, so location makes no difference to the document work.
