Punjabi is the language of the Sikh farming towns of California's Central Valley, of a large share of the country's long-haul trucking, and of the grandparents in Sikh and Pakistani households from Queens to Kent, Washington. Working-age speakers rarely need an interpreter. Their parents, and the asylum applicants arriving from Indian Punjab, do. Our office is in New York; for in-person work we assign a Punjabi interpreter based near you, and phone or video is usually available the same day.

Punjabi Interpreting Services

The Central Valley holds the densest Punjabi-speaking population in the country, from Yuba City through Stockton, Fresno and Bakersfield, with a second cluster in the Bay Area around Fremont, San Jose and Hayward, and long-standing communities in Queens, central New Jersey, the Seattle suburbs, Houston and Indianapolis. Stockton had the country's first gurdwara in 1912; the community is not new, but each round of family reunification brings new elders who need an interpreter.

Ask which side of the border. Punjabi from Ludhiana and Punjabi from Lahore are one spoken language with different scripts, different formal vocabulary and a different reflex for anything official: an Indian Punjabi speaker reaches for Hindi or English, a Pakistani Punjabi speaker for Urdu. We ask the speaker's district and assign an interpreter who grew up on the same side.

Punjabi Court Interpreter

California certifies court interpreters in Punjabi and cannot find enough of them, which is why Central Valley courts call agencies. For a criminal matter or a family case before a California judge we match a certified Punjabi interpreter where one is available; in other states the standard is a registered or otherwise qualified interpreter, and we confirm what the court will accept. The steady work beyond the courtroom is the deposition: a truck driver after a highway collision, a farm worker in a wage claim, a witness whose English covers the job and not the cross-examination. Prism is a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor.

Punjabi Medical Interpreter

The patient is the grandmother from Jalandhar who moved in to help raise the children, or the retired farm worker in Fresno with diabetes and no English for the word insulin. A federally funded hospital or clinic must provide a Punjabi interpreter at no cost, and a daughter-in-law on speakerphone is not a substitute. Video works for a follow-up. For a diagnosis, a surgical consent or a dementia assessment we send a Punjabi interpreter in person, and we ask in advance whether the patient would rather have a man or a woman, because in this community it often decides how much the patient is willing to say.

Punjabi USCIS Interpreter

USCIS interviews split two ways. The routine half is the parent or spouse at an adjustment of status or N-400 interview who wants Punjabi for the questions that matter. The harder half is the asylum office. Claims from Indian Punjab, often built on political affiliation or police treatment in a home district, come with dates, party names and village names an officer will check against the written statement, and a Punjabi interpreter who paraphrases or corrects a slip has changed the record. We send interpreters briefed to render exactly, and never a relative.

Certified Punjabi Translation for USCIS

Less needs translating than families expect. Degree certificates from Panjab University or Punjabi University, Punjab School Education Board results and most passports and police clearances are already in English, and USCIS takes them as they are. What does need a certified translation is the Gurmukhi that fills the blanks on a bilingual form: the handwritten entries on a municipal birth certificate, a marriage certificate, an affidavit sworn before a notary in Ludhiana, and the revenue records, the fard or jamabandi, that families submit to prove land ownership for a financial affidavit, which arrive in Gurmukhi and on older copies in Urdu script. Sikh marriages registered under the Anand Marriage Act come on a certificate most translators have not seen. From Pakistani Punjab the official record is in Urdu, and we say so when the scan arrives. We reproduce the form as laid out, translate every stamp, spell names to the passport and note whether Singh or Kaur appears as a middle or family name, and deliver a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy; the service is at certified translation.

Client Reviews

Prism Linguistics is rated 4.6 out of 5 across 67 client reviews for its interpreting and translation work in the United States. That is the company-wide figure; we do not publish a separate rating per language because there is no honest way to measure one. Questions we get asked

Do you send a Punjabi interpreter or a Hindi one?
A Punjabi one. Most Indian Punjabi speakers of working age can follow Hindi, but the elders and the asylum applicants who actually need an interpreter often cannot, and a hearing is not the place to find out. Tell us the speaker is Punjabi and which district they come from, and we assign accordingly.
Can you provide a Punjabi interpreter for a deposition or hearing in the Central Valley?
Yes. Our only office is in New York and our Punjabi interpreters work nationwide, so for Fresno, Bakersfield, Stockton or Sacramento we assign one based nearby, and phone or video reaches anywhere, usually the same day. For a California court matter tell us the court so we can match the credential.
Do Indian degree certificates issued in English need a Punjabi translation for USCIS?
No. If the document is issued in English, USCIS accepts it without a translation, and most Indian university degrees and board results are. What needs translating is the Gurmukhi on birth, marriage and land records and on affidavits. Send us the scans and we tell you which pages actually need a certified translation.
