Pothwari is not Urdu, and that is the assumption most bookings get wrong. It is the Pahari-Pothwari of the Pothohar Plateau north of the Salt Range, the home speech of Rawalpindi, Jhelum and Chakwal, and it runs into the Pahari of Azad Kashmir and the Mirpuri that British Pakistani families carry. The US community is smaller than Britain's but real, and it shows up in family cases, hospital visits and immigration filings. The census will not help you here. Pakistan's 2023 count folded Pothwari into Punjabi and gave it no line of its own, so a speaker's papers never name the language. On the ground the plateau north of the Salt Range speaks Pothwari, Jhelum is roughly where the Majha Punjabi of Lahore takes over, and Pahari and Mirpuri sit on the same continuum. A linguist raised anywhere in that belt is the right match. This is the Pothwari end of the Pahari-Pothwari continuum; for a speaker from Azad Kashmir we assign the Pahari variety instead.
The wrong substitutes are the common ones. A Punjabi interpreter from central Punjab follows the gist and drops vocabulary; an Urdu interpreter offers the school language, which older speakers accept and then understand less of than they let show. No state runs a court certification exam in Pothwari. New York examines court interpreters in Urdu and Punjabi, and elsewhere courts work from a qualified Pothwari interpreter. Most Pothwari court work in the United States is family and immigration matters rather than serious crime: custody disputes, protective orders, the removal hearing behind an asylum claim. Give us the court and the case type and we confirm what that bench will accept, since states certify Urdu and Punjabi but not Pothwari itself. We act for attorneys and courts directly and hold no court appointment. The interpreter's job is to render, never to advise.
In a clinic a Pothwari-speaking grandmother is too often left to a bilingual grandchild or an Urdu-speaking receptionist, and the detail in a diagnosis slips away. A hospital that takes federal funding must provide a professional interpreter at no cost to her, and most families never hear this. Video is fine for a consent conversation or a follow-up call. For a first cancer discussion, a psychiatric assessment, or an elderly patient who freezes at a screen, we send someone into the room.
Naturalization and green-card interviews are the everyday work, and a family petition or an asylum claim from the plateau raises the stakes. The officer records the applicant's own words, so an interpreter who quietly upgrades halting Urdu into fluent answers hides how much the person actually follows. We brief every Pothwari interpreter to render what is said, keep the hesitations, and flag when a speaker is guessing at an Urdu phrase rather than answering it. We never let a relative interpret.
A Pothwari file is really a Pakistani document set, and none of it is written in Pothwari. The birth record is a Union Council certificate from the union where the birth was registered, which NADRA now prints in both Urdu and English; the B-Form, or Child Registration Certificate, cannot issue without it; the CNIC arrives at eighteen; and the marriage is a nikah nama in Urdu. The recurring snag is a name that reads one way on an old handwritten Union Council entry and another on the CNIC.
