Flemish is Dutch. The Dutch spoken in Flanders, the northern half of Belgium, shares its written standard with the Netherlands, and a Flemish interpreter and a Dutch interpreter read the same documents. What differs is the spoken habit, and that is the point of this page. Our office is in New York; interpreters are placed by location for in-person work and by phone or video everywhere else. Demand for a Flemish interpreter in the United States is modest and specific. It comes from attorneys deposing a witness from Antwerp or Ghent, from a Belgian parent visiting an adult child, and from the occasional court party who is entitled to testify in their own language and chooses to. Most Flemish speakers of working age have good English, so the request is rarely about comprehension in general and nearly always about precision under pressure.
Where did the speaker grow up? That settles the assignment. A speaker from Flanders says ge and gij where someone from Amsterdam says jij, reaches for French loanwords, and in a long answer settles into tussentaal, the in-between register that sits above dialect and below the standard. A Netherlands-trained interpreter can follow it but starts asking for repeats, and in a deposition every repeat is on the record. We assign a Flemish interpreter raised in Flanders for those settings, and a Dutch interpreter when the speaker is Dutch.
No US state runs a court certification exam in Flemish, so a judge qualifies the interpreter on the record. Depositions are the bulk of the legal work: a Belgian executive or engineer giving evidence in a commercial or patent matter, with counsel on both sides listening for the exact verb. We confirm with the court or the deposing attorney what will be accepted, then send an interpreter who grew up with Flemish speech. We work for courts and law firms as a private agency rather than a court-appointed vendor.
The hospital request is nearly always for an older visitor: a parent from Flanders taken ill on a visit, or a grandparent in long-term care whose English has thinned with age and who has slipped back into the dialect of Limburg or West Flanders. Providers that receive federal funding must supply an interpreter at no cost to the patient. Video suits a consult or a medication review. Because Flemish speakers are spread thinly across the country, most assignments outside the Northeast run by phone or video, and for a short hearing, a USCIS interview or a business call that is the sensible choice. A naturalization or green card interview for a Belgian spouse seldom needs an interpreter at all; when it does, the applicant may bring one, and we brief ours to render each answer as given. Ask for a Flemish translation and you will get a Dutch one, because there is no other kind. Belgian civil-status records from a Flemish municipality are drawn up in standard Dutch, and since March 2019 every one of them sits in the national DABS database, so an extract can be printed by any municipality in the country, in Dutch, French or German. Brussels records come out in French more often than families expect. The English translation reproduces the municipality, the register numbers and the DABS reference as printed, states which language the original was in, and carries a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy. Where a court wants an apostille, it comes from the Legalisation Service of the FPS Foreign Affairs in Brussels, and we translate the apostille sheet as well. Surnames are the Flemish tell: Van de Velde, Vandevelde and van de Velde can belong to one family across three documents, and we copy each exactly and flag the variant so the passport still matches.
