Most Dutch and Flemish nationals in the United States work in English all day, so a Dutch interpreter is booked for the exceptions rather than the everyday. The exceptions are specific: a witness who has to testify word for word in a deposition, an elderly parent visiting for a green card interview, a Surinamese or Antillean applicant whose strongest second language is Dutch. Prism Linguistics runs one office, in New York, and assigns Dutch interpreters across the country, in person where it matters and by video where it does not. Because the community is small and scattered, video often turns out to be the practical answer.

Dutch Interpreting Services

The Census Bureau's 2009 to 2013 survey counted about 142,000 people speaking Dutch at home, spread thinly rather than pooled in any one metro. There is no Dutch quarter to dispatch from; the request comes from a law firm in one city, a hospital in another, a USCIS field office in a third. That is why the network is nationwide and why remote interpreting carries much of the work. When an assignment does need a person in the room, we send a Dutch interpreter based near it.

Dutch, Flemish, Surinamese or Antillean? Tell the interpreter which. The written standard is one language, and a single Dutch interpreter works across all four, but the accent, some everyday vocabulary and the register differ. Flemish is Dutch spoken in Belgium with its own turns of phrase; Surinamese Dutch differs again and mixes in Sranan; the Caribbean islands add Papiamento. None of that stops the interpreter, but knowing where the speaker is from before the appointment saves the first ten minutes of adjustment, which in a deposition is ten minutes you do not want to lose.

Dutch Court Interpreter

Most Dutch court work is commercial: a deposition where a Dutch or Belgian witness has to testify precisely, an arbitration, a cross-border contract dispute. No state offers a court certification exam in Dutch; California lists it as a registered language, and courts elsewhere qualify a Dutch interpreter case by case. Tell us the court or the deposition and the case type and we confirm what will be accepted before you book. We work for attorneys and the courts directly, and we are a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor.

Dutch USCIS Interpreter

The USCIS bookings are usually a visiting parent at a green card interview or a Surinamese or Antillean applicant whose English is thin. At the interview the Dutch interpreter renders exactly what is asked and answered, without smoothing or explaining, because the officer is listening for the applicant's own words. We do not send a relative in the interpreter's place, and where a document accompanies the interview we can prepare its certified translation in the same booking.

Dutch Medical Interpreter

Medical requests are the rarest of the three and usually involve an older relative visiting a child in the US. A hospital that receives federal funding must provide a Dutch interpreter at no cost to the patient, and it is worth asking, though few hospitals hold one on a contracted line. Video handles a consult or a consent conversation cleanly. We send someone in person for an elderly patient, a mental health assessment, or wherever a screen would get in the way of the exchange.

Certified Dutch Translation for USCIS

Dutch civil records come from four places, and the issuing authority is different in each. A Dutch birth, marriage or death record is an extract from the civil registry of the gemeente where the event happened, and many gemeenten will issue an international multilingual extract that USCIS accepts with no translation at all. Flemish records come from a Belgian gemeente in Dutch; Surinamese records from the Centraal Bureau voor Burgerzaken in Paramaribo; island records from the civil registries of Aruba, Curacao and Sint Maarten. Send us the actual document and we will tell you whether it even needs translating before you pay for one.

Two things need care. Dutch surname prefixes, van, de, van der, are capitalised and alphabetised differently in the Netherlands and Belgium, and a US record may have fused them into the surname; we follow the passport and note the original form. And a verklaring omtrent het gedrag is a certificate of conduct, not a police record, so translating it as one misleads the officer. Older Surinamese and Antillean records that mix in Papiamento or Sranan names are reproduced as written, not normalised. Each translation carries a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy; the full service is at Dutch translation services.

Client Reviews

Prism Linguistics is rated 4.6 out of 5 across 67 client reviews for its interpreting and translation work in the United States. That is the company-wide figure; we do not publish a separate rating per language because there is no honest way to measure one. If a Dutch assignment ever falls short, tell us and we put it right.

Questions we get asked

Is a verklaring omtrent het gedrag a police record for USCIS?
It is a certificate of conduct issued in the Netherlands, close to what other countries call a police clearance but not identical, and a translation that simply labels it a police record can confuse an adjudicator. We translate it as a certificate of conduct, reproduce the issuing authority as printed, and deliver it with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy so the officer sees exactly what the document is.
Are your Dutch interpreters court certified?
No state runs a court certification exam in Dutch, so there is no certified Dutch court interpreter to assign; California treats Dutch as a registered language and other courts qualify an interpreter case by case. Tell us the court or the deposition and the case type and we confirm what will be accepted. We are a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor.
There is no Dutch community near me. Can you still cover the appointment?
Yes. Dutch speakers are spread thinly across the country, so most of our Dutch interpreting is arranged by phone or video, which we can usually set up the same day for a deposition call, a clinic or a remote hearing. When an appointment has to be in person, we assign a Dutch interpreter based near you and allow a little more notice for travel.
