Most Thai interpreting in this country sits at two points in a life: the spouse or fiancee of a US citizen in her first years here, and the older parent at a medical appointment. Between them is a working-age generation that manages in English. Our office is in New York and the Thai interpreter we assign lives near the appointment, with phone and video wherever a same-day booking is needed. The question we ask before assigning anyone is where in Thailand the person grew up.
The community is concentrated in Southern California, where Los Angeles built the Thai Town the country's restaurants grew out of, with further pockets in the Bay Area, Las Vegas, Chicago and the Texas metros. The Census Bureau's 2017-2021 survey counted roughly 76,000 speakers of Thai, Lao and related languages in California alone. The people who call us are rarely from the middle of that group; they are the newest arrivals and the oldest.
Central Thai is not the only Thai. A speaker from the Northeast may put Thai on the form and think in Isan, a Lao dialect with its own tones and everyday words that Central Thai speakers follow only with effort. A Bangkok-trained interpreter can lose a rural witness on precisely the words the case turns on. Ask where in Thailand the person grew up, and if the answer is the Northeast, we look for an interpreter who works in Isan or Lao rather than one guessing at it.
Thai comes up at USCIS more than its numbers suggest, because so much of the demand is spouse and fiancee petitions. The interpreter renders exactly what is said, and a fiancee interview is no place for a helpful friend filling in the gaps. We brief for neutrality and we do not seat a relative in the interpreter's chair. Where a name-change history is part of the file, we make sure the interpreter has seen it, so a shift from a birth name to a married name does not read as confusion in the room.
A federally funded hospital must provide a Thai interpreter at no charge, and the patient who needs one is usually an older parent whose English never reached the clinic. Video handles a consult or a consent conversation. We send someone in person for discharge planning, a mental health assessment, or when the family wants a face in the room. For a patient from the Northeast, we check whether Isan is the better language before we assign.
Thai has no certification exam under the national court interpreter program, so acceptance is a state-by-state matter: California treats Thai as a registered language, while Indiana counts it among the languages of its credentialed court interpreters. A Thai marriage or fiancee petition tends to bring the same short stack of records, and the one people forget is the name change. Thai families rename themselves often, so a single person may hold a birth certificate (the sutibat), a house registration (the tabien baan) and a passport that do not all agree, with a marriage or divorce registration somewhere in between. The district office issues all of them, the amphoe in the provinces or the khet in Bangkok, and every one is dated in the Buddhist Era, so a certificate marked 2567 belongs to 2024; the translation converts the year and keeps the Thai date beside it. Romanisation is where identity comes apart. Thailand has an official transliteration scheme, but passports, older records and family preference do not all obey it, so the same woman turns up as Supaporn in one place and Suphaphon in another. When the birth name, a married name and the passport name form a chain, the translations only work if the name-change certificate that links them is in the file, or the petition stalls on who the applicant is.
