Tatar is a language the census never counts, and it is the kind of language people call us for after everyone else has said no. The community in the US is small and old, organized in New York since the 1950s, with newer arrivals from Tatarstan and, since 2014, Crimean Tatars from Ukraine. Volga Tatar and Crimean Tatar are two languages. The Tatar of Kazan and the Volga-Ural region is closest to Bashkir; Crimean Tatar sits on a different branch of Kipchak Turkic, and speakers of one do not reliably follow the other. Volga Tatar is written in Cyrillic inside Russia, Crimean Tatar in a Latin alphabet since the 1990s. We ask which the speaker uses before we assign a Tatar interpreter.
Then we ask about Russian. Almost every Tatar speaker from Russia is bilingual, and for an engineer from Kazan being deposed about a contract, Russian is often the stronger language and the better booking. For a grandmother from a Tatar-speaking village, or for a Crimean Tatar who left Crimea to avoid living under Russian rule, it is not, and offering Russian can land as an insult. We let the speaker choose.
No state certifies court interpreters in Tatar, and it does not appear on any National Center for State Courts exam list, so a court that needs one has to find a qualified Tatar interpreter and examine their background on the record. Courts have used us for exactly that when nobody on the local roster could take the case. The matters tend to be civil and family: depositions involving a Tatarstan company, divorce and custody hearings. We work for courts, attorneys and law firms directly, and we are a private agency rather than a court-appointed vendor.
The patient who needs a Tatar medical interpreter is usually elderly and usually a parent visiting or living with an adult child, and the child has been interpreting until the day the diagnosis got serious. A provider taking federal funding must supply an interpreter at no charge, and the family can ask for Tatar rather than accept Russian by default. We send an interpreter in person for consent conversations, oncology and geriatric care, and by video for routine follow-ups.
Green card and naturalization interviews for Tatar-speaking spouses and parents, and asylum claims by Crimean Tatars who left after the 2014 annexation, are the USCIS work. For Crimean Tatar asylum applicants the account often involves searches, detentions and pressure on family members, and the interpreter renders it in the applicant's own words without slipping into Russian to fill a gap. We never use a relative.
A Tatar family's documents are almost always Russian or Ukrainian documents. Tatarstan's birth, marriage and death certificates come from the Russian ZAGS registry as a Russian-language svidetelstvo, and where a Tatar-language page is attached it carries no number and no legal weight, so we translate the Russian in full, stamps and serial included, then the Tatar page marked as a duplicate. Crimean Tatars hold Ukrainian civil records, and since 2014 sometimes Russian-issued ones for the same events, and both must be translated as issued.
Names are the recurring problem. Tatar given names use Cyrillic letters Russian does not have, and the passport romanizes them by Russian rules, so a woman may be Gulnara on her passport, Gölnara on her diploma and Gulnar on her birth record.
