About the Tamil Language

Tamil is one of the oldest continuously spoken languages on Earth, with literature stretching back more than two thousand years. It has roughly 80 million speakers across Tamil Nadu (India), Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, and the diaspora. In the United States Tamil speakers number around 300,000, concentrated in California's Bay Area, New Jersey, Dallas, Austin, and the Seattle area — many of them working in tech, medicine, and academia. Translation work splits between civil documents for USCIS (Indian and Sri Lankan birth and marriage certificates) and academic transcripts for credential evaluation.

  • Primary regions: India (Tamil Nadu), Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia and Tamil-speaking communities across the USA
  • Language origin / family: Dravidian language family — one of the world's oldest living classical languages
  • Estimated speakers: Around 80 million speakers worldwide
