Tamil reaches us from two countries and two kinds of client. From Tamil Nadu it is the family of an engineer or a physician: a parent in hospital, a spouse at a green card interview, a stack of certificates from a municipal registrar. From Sri Lanka it is more often an asylum or family case whose facts sit in Jaffna, Batticaloa or Colombo. Our office is in New York; Tamil interpreters work nationwide, assigned near the appointment for in-person work and by phone or video anywhere.

Tamil Interpreting Services

Tamil grew faster than almost any other language in the country over four decades, and the roughly 294,000 speakers the Census Bureau reported in 2019 sit where the technology and medical employers are: central New Jersey, the Bay Area, the Dallas and Houston suburbs, the Chicago collar counties, Atlanta and Seattle. Almost none of those working-age speakers will ever book an interpreter for themselves. The bookings are for their parents, their spouses and their Sri Lankan relatives.

Where did the speaker grow up? Tamil from Chennai and Tamil from Jaffna understand each other, but the Sri Lankan variety holds on to older words and forms, and an interpreter raised in Tamil Nadu tends to paraphrase them. In a hospital that is a nuisance. In an asylum interview, where an officer is weighing the exact account of a detention or a displacement, paraphrase is a credibility problem. We ask the question at intake and assign on the answer, in both directions.

Tamil Medical Interpreter

The typical Tamil patient is a parent in their seventies, in the US on a visitor visa or newly sponsored, admitted for a cardiac or orthopedic problem. The child interprets, softens, and forgets to mention the ayurvedic preparation the parent takes every morning. Any provider that receives federal funds must supply a Tamil interpreter at no cost, and most families do not know to ask. We send an interpreter in person for admissions, consent and discharge, and take video for follow-ups where the patient is comfortable with a screen.

Tamil USCIS Interpreter

Green card and naturalization interviews are the routine work: a spouse from Coimbatore answering questions about the marriage, a parent sponsored under a family petition, a grandmother taking the civics test in Tamil under an age exemption. The interpreter renders each answer and nothing else, and we brief them not to help a nervous applicant along, because the officer is comparing answers across the couple and a helpful addition becomes a discrepancy. Sri Lankan asylum interviews are the harder end: dates of detention, the names of camps and army checkpoints, a chronology the applicant has told many times and must tell again exactly. We assign a Sri Lankan Tamil interpreter for those.

Tamil Court Interpreter

No state offers a full court certification exam in Tamil that we have been able to find; California lists it among its registered languages, and elsewhere a judge takes a registered or otherwise qualified interpreter. Tamil court work runs to family matters, probate involving property in India, and depositions of witnesses who are perfectly fluent in English until the questions get precise, at which point they want to answer in Tamil. Tell us the court and the case type and we confirm what it accepts. We are a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor.

Certified Tamil Translation for USCIS

A Tamil Nadu birth certificate is three different documents depending on where the birth was registered. The Greater Chennai Corporation issues a printed, computerised certificate. A district municipality issues a bilingual form where the English column was typed in years after the Tamil entry and does not always agree with it. A village panchayat issues a handwritten Tamil register extract under a rubber stamp. USCIS wants all of it translated, both columns included, with any disagreement stated rather than quietly reconciled. Sri Lankan records come from a Divisional Secretariat under the Registrar General's Department, and can carry Sinhala entries beside the Tamil. Then the initial. A Tamil name on a certificate leads with the father's initial, so S. Priya on the record is Priya, daughter of Suresh, on the passport, and a translator who expands or drops the initial without a note has created a name mismatch. We keep the form as printed, explain it, and match the passport. Degrees from Anna University and the University of Madras and police clearances get the same care. The service is at certified translation.

Client Reviews

Prism Linguistics is rated 4.6 out of 5 across 67 client reviews for its interpreting and translation work in the United States. That is the company-wide figure; we do not publish a separate rating per language because there is no honest way to measure one. If a Tamil assignment ever falls short, tell us and we put it right.

Questions we get asked

Can you translate a handwritten Tamil birth register extract from a village panchayat?
Yes. Handwritten Tamil entries from a village panchayat or a smaller municipality are common, and our Tamil translators read them alongside the typed English column that was often added later. Where the two columns disagree we say so in the translation rather than pick one, and we deliver a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy prepared for USCIS.
My parents are visiting from Tamil Nadu and one has been admitted to hospital. Can you help today?
Usually, yes. A Tamil interpreter by phone or video can normally be connected the same day anywhere in the country, and for an in-person interpreter we assign one based near the hospital where we have one. Any provider that takes federal funding must arrange a Tamil interpreter at no cost to the patient, and the hospital can book us directly.
Do your Tamil interpreters handle Sri Lankan asylum interviews?
Yes, and we assign a Sri Lankan Tamil interpreter for them rather than an Indian one, because the vocabulary of the north and east, the place names and the account of events there have to be rendered exactly as the applicant gives them. Tell us the case type when you book and we match on that basis.
