Swazi and siSwati are one language, and this page uses the English name; our siSwati page carries the same work under the name the language uses for itself. The people who need a Swazi interpreter here are usually older relatives, patients whose English covers a job but not a diagnosis, and the occasional witness. From our single office in New York we assign a linguist near the appointment for in-person jobs and connect by phone or video otherwise. First we ask where the speaker is from, Eswatini or South Africa's Mpumalanga, because the vocabulary is not identical between them.
Do not send a Zulu interpreter to a Swazi speaker. Swazi is a Nguni language and close enough to Zulu that the two follow each other in ordinary talk, which is exactly what makes the substitution tempting and wrong: under cross-examination, or in a careful medical history, a Zulu interpreter misses the words only Swazi carries. We book Swazi as Swazi. We also confirm whether the speaker learned it in Eswatini or in Mpumalanga, home to most of South Africa's Swazi speakers, since usage shifts between the two.
This is a rare booking in the United States, and rarity is why it comes to us. No state runs a certification exam for court interpreters in Swazi, so a court relies on a qualified interpreter, most often by video. We take the work from courts, hospitals and attorneys directly, and we are honest about the limits: as a private agency we are not a court-appointed vendor.
On the record the court needs the witness's own words, and in a language with no certification exam that puts the weight on getting the right interpreter. The officer listens for the applicant's exact words, so an interpreter who tidies a reply or fills a pause changes the story on the file. We instruct the interpreter to render and no more, and we keep a bilingual relative out of that seat.
When a Swazi translation is really needed, it tends to be an Eswatini document rather than a South African one. Eswatini's civil registry records births, deaths and marriages, and though current certificates are printed in English, an older certificate, a chief's letter, a church baptism entry or a sworn statement can come written in Swazi and need certified translation for USCIS. South Africa issues its certificates in English, so a Mpumalanga speaker usually needs us only for an affidavit or a traditional council letter drafted in Swazi.
The recurring difficulty is the spelling of names. Swazi orthography and the spelling on an older English-language record often disagree, so one person's name appears two ways across a file. We keep the original spelling of each document and note the variant against the passport, so the officer is not left guessing whether two spellings are one person.
