Susu reaches us mostly through asylum and immigration work, from Guinea's coast and from the Kambia side of Sierra Leone. The trade language of Conakry, Kindia and Forecariah, it belongs to a large West African community that is small on paper here but active in the immigration courts. Our office is in New York and the interpreter works wherever the interview or hearing falls, in person where a Susu linguist is near and otherwise by phone or video. The one thing we settle first is the language itself, not the passport.
French is not an automatic stand-in. Someone who finished secondary school in Conakry may follow a French interpreter without trouble; a market trader from Forecariah, or a Susu speaker from across the Sierra Leonean border, often cannot, and a credible fear interview run in a half-understood second language breeds the contradictions that sink a claim. So we book by language, not by country of origin. Susu is not Pular and not Maninka, the other big languages of Guinea, and the three are not interchangeable.
Susu itself is fairly consistent across its range, so an interpreter from Guinea can serve a speaker from Sierra Leone without difficulty. It is a rare language in American courts, which is why it comes to us. No state certifies court interpreters in Susu, so an immigration court works from a qualified interpreter, usually over the phone or by video. The credible fear or asylum interview is where the language matters most, because the officer is weighing consistency, and every detail lost to a poor match becomes a discrepancy in the file. Most of a Guinean file is in French, not Susu. The civil records are the extrait d'acte de naissance from the mairie, the marriage certificate and school diplomas, all needing certified French to English translation. The document that causes the most trouble is the jugement supplétif: because so many births went unregistered, an adult obtains a judgment from the tribunal de première instance and the civil status officer later transcribes it into the register, so the file may hold the judgment, the transcription, or both, with dates years apart.
