The people who call us for a Sranang Tongo interpreter are Surinamese, and the useful question at intake is not the country but the language of the home. Suriname runs its courts, its schools and its official paperwork in Dutch, yet Sranang Tongo is the creole that ties the whole country together in conversation. Our only office is in New York, and the interpreter is assigned wherever the hearing or the clinic happens to be, in person when one is near and otherwise by phone or video.
Dutch or Sranang Tongo? That is the call to make before booking, and it turns on who is speaking. A younger Surinamese professional is usually at ease in Dutch. An older person, someone from the interior, or a member of a Maroon community may think and answer far more readily in Sranang Tongo, and a Dutch interpreter in that situation hands back neat sentences the speaker did not really produce. Sranang Tongo is also not Saramaccan or Aukan, the Maroon languages of the rivers, which stand on their own.
This is a rare assignment in the American system, and rare is what brings it to us. No state runs a certification exam for court interpreters in Sranang Tongo, so a court works from a qualified interpreter, usually connected by video. Courts, hospitals and attorneys come to us directly for it, and we are honest about the limits: we are a private agency, not an entry on any court's vendor list.
Immigration and family matters are where most Sranang Tongo court work sits, and the record has to reflect the witness exactly. In a hospital a Surinamese patient is easily assumed to be a Dutch speaker and handed a Dutch line, which holds up until the patient is old or frightened and reaches for Sranang Tongo instead. A provider funded through federal programs must supply the interpreter at no cost to the patient. Video is fine for a routine review; for a hard diagnosis, or a discharge plan with an elderly patient, we would rather have someone in the room.
Adjustment-of-status and naturalization interviews are the routine work, with the occasional protection claim behind them. The officer weighs the applicant's precise words, and an interpreter who polishes an answer into fluent Dutch or English is no longer relaying the applicant's own account. Our interpreter renders what is said and adds nothing to it, and we keep a bilingual relative out of the interpreter's chair.
A Surinamese filing is mostly a Dutch filing. Births, marriages, deaths, recognitions and adoptions are registered by the Centraal Bureau voor Burgerzaken through its local bureaus, and what reaches USCIS is a Dutch uittreksel or geboorteakte, a marriage certificate or a diploma, each needing certified Dutch to English translation. The Sranang Tongo part shows up in the informal layer: a nickname on a school or church paper, or a statement or message written in Sranang Tongo to support a petition.
