Most people who ask us for a Sotho interpreter are arranging it for a parent or a grandparent, not for themselves. The working-age caller manages in English; the elder at the hospital bed or the naturalization window does not. Our office sits in New York and the linguist sits wherever the appointment is, so we assign someone near the courthouse or clinic for in-person work and connect by phone or video, often the same day, when travel makes no sense. First we settle one thing: was the speaker raised in Lesotho or in South Africa's Free State, because the vocabulary and the older written forms are not quite the same on each side.
The name is the first thing to get right. Sotho on this page means Southern Sotho, and Sesotho is simply what the language calls itself, so book either and you reach the same interpreter. What you must not book by accident is Sepedi, the Northern Sotho of Limpopo, or Setswana; those are separate languages with their own speakers and their own pages. When a caller just says Sotho, we confirm the region before anyone is assigned.
Sotho is a rare booking in American courts and clinics, and that scarcity is the reason it reaches us at all. No state examines and certifies court interpreters in the language, so a judge works from a qualified interpreter instead, most often over video. We take these assignments from courts, hospitals and attorneys directly, and we say it plainly: we are a private agency, not a name on any approved list.
In a hearing the record has to carry what the witness actually said, not a smoothed paraphrase, and that is harder in a language with no certification exam standing behind it. We put forward interpreters whose Sotho matches the speaker's side of the border, Lesotho or the Free State, and we tell you where certification simply does not exist so the court can decide how it wants to proceed. An older Sotho speaker can run a shift or a market stall in English and still lose the thread of a diagnosis or a consent form. Any hospital or clinic that takes federal money has to provide a Sotho interpreter at no charge to the patient, and most families never hear that this is a right rather than a favor. Video carries a specialist consult well enough. For a mental health assessment, or a discharge conversation with a frail patient, we send a person into the room.
Naturalization and green-card interviews make up most of this work, and the occasional asylum interview is where the stakes climb. The officer is listening for the applicant's own words, so an interpreter who rounds off an answer or supplies a word the speaker never used hands over a different account than the one that was given. We brief the interpreter to render and nothing more, and we do not let a bilingual relative take that seat.
Where a Sotho translation is genuinely needed, the document is usually a Lesotho record rather than a South African one. Lesotho registers births and deaths through its civil registry in Maseru, and because Sotho shares official status with English there, an older certificate, a church baptism entry or a chief's letter can arrive written in Sotho. Birth registration in Lesotho has long been incomplete, so an adult born there may hold a sworn affidavit of birth instead of a certificate, and we translate that for what it is rather than dressing it up as a birth record.
South African papers are a different matter. Home Affairs there prints its certificates in English, so a Free State speaker usually needs us only for an affidavit or a traditional council letter written in Sotho. The recurring snag across both countries is the spelling of names: Lesotho keeps an older missionary spelling and South Africa uses a newer one, so a single name can appear two ways in one file.
