Sinhalese is a small language in the US and we treat it as one: no promises of an interpreter on every corner, but a real network that reaches most of the country and a translation desk that handles Sri Lankan paperwork every week. Our office is in New York, where the largest Sri Lankan community in the country lives, and our Sinhalese interpreters work nationwide. For an in-person appointment we assign one based near you; for phone or video we can usually connect the same day.

Sinhalese Interpreting Services

Who needs a Sinhalese interpreter? Not the software engineer or the physician; they came through English-medium education and never will. Their parents do, at a cardiology appointment or a naturalization interview, and so does a spouse at a green card interview whose English is fine for shopping and not for an officer's questions. Sinhalese make up roughly three-quarters of Sri Lankan Americans, and about half of Sri Lankan Americans still speak Sinhala at home, so the demand is steady even if it is never large.

Sinhala or Tamil? Confirm it first. Sri Lanka has two national languages that share nothing but an island, and a Sinhalese interpreter is useless to a Tamil speaker from Jaffna. We confirm the language with the family before booking rather than guessing from a surname. The other thing we watch is register: spoken Sinhala and the written form on official documents differ sharply, and an interpreter reading a deed or a court paper aloud in a hearing has to move between the two without stumbling.

Sinhalese Medical Interpreter

Hospital work is the largest share: elderly parents at specialist appointments, hospital admissions, and the discharge conversations where instructions get lost. A provider that takes federal funding must supply a Sinhalese interpreter at no cost to the patient, and a hospital that has never seen the language before still has that duty. Video handles most consultations well; for an admission, a consent conversation or an older patient who tires on a screen we send someone in person where the network allows, and we say honestly when phone or video is the faster option.

Sinhalese USCIS Interpreter

Green card interviews for a sponsored spouse or parent and naturalization interviews for older applicants are the routine USCIS bookings. The officer needs the applicant's own words, so we send a neutral Sinhalese interpreter briefed to render each question and answer exactly and never to add, explain or reassure. We tell the family that in advance. A relative who has been the family's English voice for years is not the right person in that room, however willing.

Sinhalese Court Interpreter

Court requests are occasional: a deposition, a family court matter, a probate hearing with a witness who testifies more comfortably in Sinhala. No state offers a certification exam in Sinhalese, so a court appoints a qualified interpreter, and it is a language courts have come to us for because nobody else could staff it. Tell us the court, the case type and the date and we confirm who we can send and whether in person or by video. We work for courts, attorneys and law firms directly; we are a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor.

Sinhalese Translation Services

Certified Sinhalese Translation for USCIS

Translation is the larger half of our Sinhalese work. A Sri Lankan birth, marriage or death certificate comes from the Registrar General's Department through the Divisional Secretariat, and the printed headings may appear in three languages while the actual entries are handwritten in Sinhala. A translator who copies the English headings and leaves the handwriting alone has produced something USCIS will send back. We render every entry, every registrar's stamp and every marginal amendment. Applicants often hold an English version from the Registrar General's Department already; we check it against the Sinhala original and add the signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that USCIS wants. Some applicants have no certificate at all. People from the coastal districts hit by the 2004 tsunami may hold a probable age certificate or an affidavit in its place, and we translate it with a note explaining what it is. Sinhalese names carry a long ancestral prefix and a village name that the passport shortens, so we match the passport and record the full form. Deeds, school leaving certificates and affidavits follow the same rules. The full document service is at certified translation.

Client Reviews

Prism Linguistics is rated 4.6 out of 5 across 67 client reviews for its interpreting and translation work in the United States. That is the company-wide figure; we do not publish a separate rating per language because there is no honest way to measure one. If a Sinhalese assignment ever falls short, tell us and we put it right.

Questions we get asked

Do you have Sinhalese interpreters outside the New York area?
Yes, though the network is thinner than for a major language. Our only office is in New York and our Sinhalese interpreters are based in several regions; for an in-person job we assign the nearest one, and where none is close we say so and offer video or phone, which is usually available the same day.
Can a Sinhalese interpreter read a Sri Lankan deed or court paper aloud in a hearing?
Yes. Written Sinhala on official documents is a different register from everyday speech, and we assign interpreters who work comfortably in both. If the document also needs to be filed in English, we prepare a certified translation ahead of the hearing so the interpreter is not sight-translating under pressure.
My Sri Lankan certificate already has English headings. Do I still need a translation?
Usually yes. The headings are printed in Sinhala, Tamil and English, but the entries themselves are written in Sinhala, often by hand, and USCIS needs those translated. We translate the entries, stamps and marginal notes and attach a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy.
