Shikomoro is the language of the Comoros, spoken by almost everyone in the islands and sharing official status with French and Arabic. It is not one uniform tongue but a set of island varieties, and that is the first thing we settle on any booking. Our office is in New York and the interpreter works wherever the hearing, the clinic or the interview is. The Comorian community in the United States is small, so phone and video carry most of this work, and for an in-person job we assign whoever on the network is closest and matches the island.
Which island? Prism matches the variety, and it changes the assignment. Shingazidja on Grande Comore is the most widely spoken; Shindzuani belongs to Anjouan, Shimwali to Moheli and Shimaore to Mayotte. Shindzuani and Shimaore understand each other, and Shimwali and Shingazidja do, but across those two pairs comprehension falls away, so an Anjouan interpreter for a Grande Comore witness is a compromise, not a match. We ask at intake and assign on it.
French runs the administration, so a younger Comorian is often served perfectly well by a French interpreter, and we will say so rather than insist on the rarer booking. The Shikomoro interpreter is for the elderly relative, or for testimony about a life that was lived in the language.
