Sena is a small language on this side of the Atlantic, and the requests we get are almost all immigration and medical. It is spoken along the lower Zambezi, in the Mozambican provinces of Tete, Sofala, Zambezia and Manica, and across the border in the Chikwawa and Nsanje districts of Malawi. That border matters more than it looks, because it decides both the language of the documents and, often, the variety of Sena a speaker uses. Our office is in New York; we send an in-person Sena linguist where one is near, and otherwise connect by phone or video.
Which side of the border comes first. The Sena of Malawi has drifted far enough from the Mozambican variety that some linguists treat it as its own language, and the Barwe and Podzo forms sit further out again, so we ask the speaker's district before we assign anyone. Most Sena speakers who went to school also carry Portuguese in Mozambique, or English and Chichewa in Malawi. The one who really needs a Sena interpreter is usually an older relative, or an applicant recounting village life whose Portuguese is thinner than it first sounds.
No state runs a court certification exam in Sena, so a court works from a qualified interpreter, usually by phone or video, and this is the kind of rare language courts come to us for. A hospital that takes federal funds must provide one at no cost. At a USCIS interview the Sena interpreter renders each answer as given, and never through a relative.
Naturalization and adjustment interviews are the common bookings, with the occasional asylum case. The officer records the applicant's own words, so an interpreter who lets an older speaker lean on shaky Portuguese hides how much they actually follow. We assign a Sena interpreter matched to the speaker's district, brief them to render what is said and keep the hesitations, and we never seat a relative in that chair.
In a clinic a Sena-speaking elder is easily assumed to manage in Portuguese and left to a bilingual relative, and the detail in a diagnosis goes missing. Any provider taking federal funds must supply a professional interpreter at no cost. Video handles a review or a consent talk. For a difficult diagnosis or a mental health assessment we look for an in-person Sena interpreter, and relay through Portuguese only when no Sena speaker can be reached in time.
Sena court work is mostly the immigration side and the occasional family matter. Give us the court, the case, and whether the speaker is from the Mozambican or the Malawian side, and we arrange a qualified Sena interpreter, by phone or video where none is close enough to attend. We act for attorneys and courts directly and hold no court appointment.
Whether there is anything to translate depends on which country the speaker left. Mozambique's Conservatória do Registo Civil, which runs 68 conservatories and registration posts inside hospitals, issues the certidão de nascimento in Portuguese, so a Mozambican Sena speaker needs Portuguese to English. Malawi's National Registration Bureau prints its birth certificates in English, so a Sena speaker from that side of the border often needs nothing translated. Sena itself rarely appears on a certificate.
Where Sena does appear, in a church register, a chief's letter or a sworn statement, one of our Sena translators prepares it with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy. Names are the usual snag: a Sena name set down by a Portuguese-trained registrar and by an English-trained one in Malawi come out differently, so we spell to the passport and note the variant.
