Portuguese Creole is a family of languages, not one language, and getting the right member is the whole job. The label covers Cape Verdean Kriolu, which our Crioulo and Cape Verdean pages treat in more depth, the Kriol that serves as the everyday language of Guinea-Bissau, and the three creoles of São Tomé and Príncipe: Forro, Angolar and Principense. Portuguese is the official language of all three countries, which is why the official documents are Portuguese and the creole shows up in the interview and the supporting letters. Ask the country first, then the island or district. Cape Verdean Kriolu and Guinea-Bissau Kriol are related Upper Guinea creoles, close enough for a market conversation and not close enough for testimony, and the São Tomé creoles belong to a different Gulf of Guinea group, so a Cape Verdean interpreter will not follow Forro. Within Cape Verde we ask which island, because the speech shifts across them. And a Portuguese interpreter is a weak substitute: an educated speaker switches into Portuguese in a formal room and then understands less than the manner suggests. So we book the specific creole.
Asylum work is a large part of why these languages reach us, and it is where the wrong creole does the most damage. The officer is weighing the applicant's exact words, and a Portuguese Creole interpreter who guesses at an unfamiliar variety produces confident errors that read on the record as inconsistency. We match the interpreter to the applicant's own creole and island, brief them to render and not explain, and never seat a relative in that chair. Where the applicant speaks more freely to a stranger, we keep it to phone or video.
No state runs a court certification exam in any Portuguese Creole, so a bench works from a qualified interpreter in the specific creole, and Kriol and the São Tomé creoles are exactly the rare languages courts come to us for. A hospital or clinic that takes federal funding must provide a Portuguese Creole interpreter at no cost to the patient, and Cape Verdean and Bissau-Guinean families often do not know the charge is not theirs. Video carries a consultation. For an older patient, a mental health assessment, or discharge instructions that must be understood, a person in the room is better. A Portuguese speaker is not a safe stand-in, because the patient who nods along in Portuguese may be missing half of it, so we send a speaker of the creole they actually think in.
None of the creole is on the certificate. The birth, marriage and death records a Portuguese Creole speaker files with USCIS are Portuguese: from Cape Verde a certidão from the Conservatória do Registo Civil of the island concerned, valid for six months from the date of issue, and from Guinea-Bissau and São Tomé the equivalent registo civil certificates. The creole appears in the supporting material instead, a sworn statement or a letter from a relative, and because Kriol and Kriolu have no settled everyday spelling we assign a translator who speaks that particular creole to render it.
