Interpreting matched to Brazilian rather than European Portuguese for court, medical and immigration work, with certified translation of cartorio records and apostille pages.
Prism Linguistics provides Brazilian Portuguese interpreters for court hearings, medical appointments and immigration interviews anywhere in the United States, in person, by phone or by video, matched to Brazilian rather than European speech, together with certified English translation of the cartório certificates, CPF records, diplomas and apostille pages Brazilian applicants file with USCIS.

This is the Brazilian Portuguese page. There is a separate Portuguese page for the European variety, and the split is deliberate, because the two share a written language and part company almost everywhere else that counts in a courtroom or a clinic. Around 725,000 Brazilian-born people lived in the United States in 2024, with the largest numbers in Florida, Massachusetts, California and New Jersey. Our office is in New York and our Brazilian Portuguese linguists work nationwide, so an in-person hearing or appointment goes to someone based near you and phone or video connects quickly, usually the same day.
Say Brazilian when you book, not just Portuguese. A Lisbon-trained interpreter can work a Brazilian hearing on paper, but the vocabulary, the pronouns and the pace differ, and a nervous applicant from Goiás or Minas Gerais gives clipped, cautious answers through a European voice, which an asylum officer can read as evasion rather than nerves. We send a Brazilian Portuguese interpreter unless you ask for otherwise. And a Spanish interpreter is not a fallback, however close the two languages sound to an outside ear; the mismatch shows up exactly where accuracy matters most.
Certification exists for this language, which is not true of most on this site. New Jersey runs a full court certification exam in Portuguese and California certifies Portuguese court interpreters, so where a court requires a credentialed interpreter we can often match it. Tell us the court and the case type and we confirm what that bench will accept before you book, and we assign a Brazilian speaker so a witness under cross-examination is heard in the register they actually use. We take work from courts, attorneys and law firms directly, and we work as a private agency rather than a court-appointed vendor.
A hospital or clinic that takes federal money must provide a Brazilian Portuguese interpreter at no cost to the patient, and many families pay out of pocket or lean on a bilingual child because nobody told them the service is free. Video handles a consultation or a specialist review. We send a person into the room for a mental health assessment, for discharge planning, or when an older patient does better with someone present. The interpreter carries the clinician's words and the patient's answers across exactly, because a relative who softens a diagnosis changes the medicine.
Adjustment-of-status and naturalization interviews are the routine work, and the asylum interview is where the stakes rise. The officer weighs the applicant's exact words, the pauses and any contradiction, so a Brazilian Portuguese interpreter who tidies an answer or fills a silence hands over a different account than the one that was told. We brief every interpreter to render and nothing more, and we never seat a bilingual relative in that chair. Where the applicant speaks more freely to someone they have never met, we keep the assignment to phone or video.
A Brazilian file has its own shape, and two traps recur. A certidão de nascimento or de casamento comes from the Cartório de Registro Civil das Pessoas Naturais where the event was registered, and since 2016 Brazil has issued Hague apostilles through cartórios authorised by the Conselho Nacional de Justiça; the apostille page is translated too, not stapled on untouched. Alongside it we handle the CPF, the certidão de antecedentes criminais and diplomas with their histórico escolar. Trap one: a tradução juramentada from a Brazilian sworn translator is not what USCIS asks for, which is a complete English translation carrying the translator's own signed certification. Trap two: a recent segunda via of a certificate prints averbações in the margin for a divorce or a name change, and a translator who skips them misstates the person's legal status. We reproduce every stamp, seal and annotation, and spell each name to the passport, including the maternal surname that Brazil places before the paternal one. The full document service is at certified translation.

Our only office is in New York, and our Brazilian Portuguese interpreters work nationwide. For in-person work we assign someone based in or near the city. These are the areas where Brazilian Portuguese work is concentrated; the full list of 288 cities is below it.
Prism Linguistics is rated 4.6 out of 5 across 67 client reviews for its interpreting and translation work in the United States. That is the company-wide figure; we do not publish a separate rating per language because there is no honest way to measure one. If a Brazilian Portuguese assignment ever falls short, tell us and we put it right.
