Very few agencies list Pahari at all, which is why the calls reach us. Ours come from attorneys with a client from Mirpur, from hospitals with an elderly patient whose Urdu runs out halfway through a history, and from courts that have tried the usual providers and found nobody. Our office is in New York and our linguists work across the country; an in-person job goes to a Pahari speaker based near you, and phone or video is usually available the same day.
Pahari here means the speech of Azad Kashmir and the Pothohar Plateau, the belt of northern Punjab around Rawalpindi. Pothwari and Mirpuri are two names for it, and we treat all three as one assignment. The ambiguity to clear first is geographic: the word Pahari also covers unrelated hill languages of India and Nepal, so before we quote we confirm the speaker's family is from Pakistan or Azad Kashmir. That takes one question and avoids sending the wrong linguist entirely.
The Urdu substitute is the mistake we see most. A Pahari speaker will usually nod through an appointment in Urdu, because Urdu was the language of school and television, and then turn out to have followed half of it. Punjabi from Lahore is closer and still not the same. Working-age Pakistani Americans, a community of roughly 684,000 by ancestry with its largest concentration around New York, rarely need us. Their parents do: the sponsored mother at a green card interview, the grandfather at a cardiology consult, the shopkeeper who copes in English until someone puts him under oath.
There is no state certification exam in Pahari anywhere in the country. New York tests court interpreters in Urdu and Punjabi, not in the language a witness from Kotli actually speaks, so a bench that needs Pahari falls back on a qualified interpreter it can vet. That is the gap courts call us to fill, and it is the honest reason to book a rare-language agency rather than a general one. Tell us the court, the county and the case type. Any hospital or clinic that takes federal funding owes a Pahari-speaking patient an interpreter at no charge, and the family is rarely told. What usually happens instead is a grandchild translating a diagnosis and leaving out the part that would upset grandmother. For a consent conversation or a routine follow-up, video works well and can be set up quickly. For discharge planning, a mental health assessment, or an older patient who does not trust a screen, we send a Pahari interpreter in person, matched to Mirpuri or Pothwari speech so the patient hears her own dialect in the room.
Naturalization interviews and adjustment-of-status interviews are the bulk of our Pahari USCIS work, most of them for a parent or spouse sponsored from Azad Kashmir. An applicant who has been quietly relying on a relative to interpret is often refused that arrangement at the window, and the interview stalls. We supply a neutral Pahari interpreter who renders every answer as given, including the hesitations, and adds nothing. For a family that brings a mixed set of Urdu documents to the same interview, the translation side below is handled by the same office.
Ask a Pahari family for their documents and you will not receive a single page written in Pahari. The language has no settled written form, so the file is Pakistani and it is in Urdu: a NADRA-era birth certificate from the Union Council with an English column that is frequently half filled, an older Urdu-only certificate for anyone born before computerization, a handwritten nikah nama, a NADRA marriage registration, a CNIC and a Family Registration Certificate. What a Pahari translator adds over a generic Urdu one is knowing that the village on the certificate is in Azad Kashmir and how a Mirpuri family name is normally romanized. The nikah nama is where filings go wrong. USCIS expects each numbered clause translated, dower and all, along with the empty columns and any note in the margin, and a tidy one-page summary is returned.
