Ndebele arrives on our desk from two countries that share a name and not much else. The Zimbabwean caller from Bulawayo speaks isiNdebele, a close cousin of Zulu; the South African caller from Mpumalanga speaks Southern Ndebele, a different language that has spent a century drifting toward Sotho. We settle which one before anything else. Our office is in New York and our Ndebele interpreters work across the country, in person where one is based near you and by phone or video everywhere else.
Zimbabwe's diaspora in the United States, around 80,000 people on 2021 figures, gathers in Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Atlanta, the Washington suburbs, New York and Southern California. Almost none of them need an interpreter for themselves. Zimbabwean schools teach in English, and a nurse or an accountant from Bulawayo will run a hearing in English without trouble. The Ndebele interpreter is for the mother who joined the family later, for the elder at a clinic, and for the asylum applicant who can tell a painful story in the language it happened in and not in the one learned at school.
The Zulu substitution is the trap. Agencies short of Ndebele speakers offer a Zulu interpreter, and because the two languages are close the offer sounds reasonable. It is fine for renewing a prescription. It is not fine for a credibility interview, where an Ndebele word rendered through its Zulu near-equivalent shifts the meaning just enough for an officer to note an inconsistency. Asylum is where Ndebele interpreting earns its keep. Claims out of Zimbabwe often rest on political activity or on personal circumstances an applicant will only describe in their first language, and the asylum officer is listening for consistency between the interview, the written statement and the evidence. An interpreter who helps, explains or tidies has changed the record. We brief every Ndebele interpreter to render the answer as spoken and nothing more, and we never seat a relative or a friend in that chair.
No state court system in the country tests interpreters in Ndebele, so there is no such thing as a certified Ndebele court interpreter; what a court can appoint is a qualified one, sworn for the case. That scarcity is exactly why courts have come to us for Ndebele: a clerk with a hearing on Thursday and nobody on the local list. A provider that takes federal funding must offer an Ndebele interpreter at no cost, and most families have never heard that. The typical patient is a parent who came over on a family visa, sitting through a cardiology consultation or an oncology consent talk with a grown child translating. The child rounds off the diagnosis to spare feelings; the doctor never learns what was left out. Video interpreting handles most of this well. Most of what a Zimbabwean applicant files needs no translation at all. The Registrar General issues birth, marriage and identity documents in English, and USCIS does not want an English original translated; we say so on the phone rather than charge for it. The Ndebele translation that matters is the material around those records: a sworn affidavit from an aunt in Bulawayo, a letter from a church or a village head, a personal statement an asylum applicant drafted in isiNdebele because it came out truer that way, and the WhatsApp threads and voice notes submitted as evidence. Each is translated in full, with the sender, the date and every switch between Ndebele and English marked, and delivered with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy.
Two details recur. USCIS wants the long-form Zimbabwean birth certificate with both parents' names and identity numbers, and a short-form one invites a Request for Evidence. And the click consonants in names such as Ncube, Nxumalo and Nqobile get respelled by US clerks, so the same person can appear two ways across a passport and a green card; we spell to the passport and note the variant.
