Mende interpreting by phone or video for asylum, court and hospital appointments, and certified translation of handwritten Mende statements, across the US.
Prism Linguistics provides Mende interpreters for asylum interviews, court hearings and medical appointments across the United States, and certified English translation of the handwritten Mende statements and older Sierra Leonean records a case turns up; most Sierra Leonean civil records are already in English.

Sierra Leone runs its offices in English, so a Mende family usually brings paperwork that needs no translation and a spoken need that does. That is the shape of almost every Mende job we take. Our office is in New York and, because in-person Mende interpreters are scarce, most assignments run by phone or video. Mende is not Krio, and a Krio speaker will not stand in for one where the account has to be exact, so we confirm the language at intake rather than assume it.
The Mende are one of Sierra Leone's two largest groups, counted at just under a third of the population in 2015 and concentrated in the Southern and Eastern Provinces. Most Mende speakers who reach the United States also have Krio and some English, so a Mende interpreter is not called for a routine errand. It is called where the English runs out: an asylum account of what happened in a village, a medical history taken from an older relative, an answer given under cross-examination.
Do not settle for Krio when the case needs Mende. The two are easy to conflate because so many Sierra Leoneans speak both, but Krio is a separate language and it will not carry a Mende testimony without loss. When accuracy is the whole point, we book Mende, matched to a speaker who follows the idiom of the Southern and Eastern Provinces, and we connect the interpreter by phone or video since in-person cover is thin.
Asylum is the heart of our Mende work, and the asylum interview lives or dies on the applicant's exact words. An interpreter who reaches for Krio when the story was lived in Mende, or who smooths a hesitation into a clean sentence, changes what the officer hears. We assign a Mende speaker, brief them to render and nothing else, and we never let a bilingual relative take that seat.
No state runs a certification exam in Mende, so a court that needs one uses a qualified interpreter, and it usually comes to an agency because the language is hard to source locally. We supply a Mende interpreter by phone or video for a hearing arranged ahead, and we work directly for the court, the attorney or the law firm. Prism is a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor.
A hospital that draws federal funding must provide a Mende interpreter at no cost to the patient, and most families never hear that it is their right. Video handles a consultation or a consent discussion. For an older patient giving a history, or a mental health assessment where a rounded-off answer misleads the clinician, we look for an interpreter who can attend and stay honest about how often that is possible.
The good news for most Mende filers is that Sierra Leone issues its civil records in English. A birth certificate, a marriage certificate or a police clearance, whether from the National Civil Registration Authority set up under the 2016 Act or from an earlier registry, goes to USCIS as it stands. The translation work is the handwritten material: a personal statement, a chief's letter, a church baptism record, often in older script and not always easy to read.
We render that handwriting into English in full and certify it with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy. One thing to flag: Mende has its own script, Kikakui, a syllabary now read by only a few hundred people; modern Mende is written in the Latin alphabet, and a document in Kikakui is unusual enough that we would tell you before quoting. The full document service is at certified translation.

Our only office is in New York, and our Mende interpreters work nationwide. For in-person work we assign someone based in or near the city. These are the areas where Mende work is concentrated; the full list of 288 cities is below it.
Prism Linguistics is rated 4.6 out of 5 across 67 client reviews for its interpreting and translation work in the United States. That is the company-wide figure; we do not publish a separate rating per language because there is no honest way to measure one. If a Mende assignment ever falls short, tell us and we put it right.
