Most Mende speakers who reach the United States also speak Krio and some English; at home, the 2015 census counted the Mende at just under 32 percent of Sierra Leone's population, concentrated in the Southern and Eastern Provinces. A Mende interpreter is needed where the English runs out: an asylum interview about events in a village, a medical history taken from an older relative, testimony under cross-examination. A Krio interpreter is not a Mende interpreter. No state runs a court certification exam in Mende, so courts use a qualified Mende interpreter, usually by phone or video because in-person Mende interpreters are scarce; Mende is the kind of rare language that courts come to a private agency for. Hospitals that take federal funds must provide a Mende interpreter at no cost. At USCIS the Mende interpreter renders each answer as given.

Mende speakers hold English documents. English is the official language of Sierra Leone, so the birth certificate, marriage certificate or police clearance a Mende family brings to USCIS is already in English and needs no translation. Civil registration has been the job of the National Civil Registration Authority (NCRA) since the National Civil Registration Act of 2016; older records came from earlier registries and hospitals and are often handwritten. Where a document does carry Mende, it is usually a handwritten statement, a chief's letter or a church record, and we translate that into English with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy. Mende also has its own script, Kikakui, a right-to-left syllabary devised in the early twentieth century and now read by a few hundred people; modern Mende is written in the Latin alphabet, and a document in Kikakui is rare enough that we would tell you before quoting.

About the Mende Language
Mende is a Mande language spoken by around 1.5 million people in southern and eastern Sierra Leone. It's one of Sierra Leone's largest indigenous languages alongside Temne. The US Mende-speaking community is small, concentrated in the DC area and parts of the Northeast. Our Mende translation work is occasional and typically tied to USCIS asylum cases from Sierra Leone's 1991-2002 civil war.

Will a Krio interpreter do for a Mende speaker?
