Marathi Interpreter and Translator Services

For the visiting parent at the hospital and the grandfather at the green card interview: a Marathi interpreter, not a Hindi speaker, plus certified translation of Maharashtra records.

Prism Linguistics provides Marathi interpreters for medical appointments, USCIS interviews, court hearings and depositions anywhere in the United States, in person, by phone or by video, together with certified English translation of birth, marriage and degree certificates issued in Maharashtra.

Marathi speakers in the US are, by and large, engineers, physicians and their families, and they do not need an interpreter. The parents who visit for six months do. That single fact shapes almost everything about Marathi work here: the appointments are medical and immigration far more than legal, the person booking is a fluent adult child, and the mistake everyone makes is assuming Hindi will do. Our office is in New York and our Marathi interpreters are wherever the clinics and field offices are, with phone and video for anywhere else.

Marathi Interpreting Services

The 2017-2021 American Community Survey counted about 107,000 people speaking Marathi at home, clustered where the software and healthcare jobs are: central New Jersey, the Chicago suburbs, the Bay Area, Dallas and Houston, Seattle and Atlanta. The interpreter is needed by the older generation within those households, and by the occasional spouse whose English serves at the office but not under cross-examination.

Hindi is not a substitute. Marathi and Hindi share Devanagari and a fair amount of Sanskrit vocabulary, and that is where the resemblance ends. An older Marathi speaker in a hospital gown will follow a Hindi interpreter partly, nod, and miss the part that matters. We book Marathi interpreters as Marathi interpreters. If nobody is available in person on the day, we offer a Marathi interpreter by phone or video before we ever suggest Hindi.

Marathi Medical Interpreter

The classic Marathi medical booking is a mother visiting on a tourist visa who ends up in an emergency department, followed by a cardiology or oncology consultation, followed by a discharge conversation nobody in the family feels able to interpret. A provider that takes federal funding must supply a Marathi interpreter at no cost to the patient; families rarely know that, and hospitals rarely have one on staff. Video reaches the bedside quickly. For consent, capacity or a serious diagnosis we prefer to send someone in person, because a seventy-year-old patient does better with a person than with a screen.

Marathi USCIS Interpreter

USCIS interviews in Marathi are mostly parents and in-laws sponsored by citizen children: the I-130 and adjustment interview, and later the naturalization interview, where an applicant old enough for the age-based English exemption answers the civics questions through an interpreter. The officer needs the applicant's own answer, not the son's improved version of it. We brief the interpreter to render only what is said and we do not let a relative interpret.

Marathi Court Interpreter

Court demand is the smallest of the three, and no state we know of certifies interpreters in Marathi; New Jersey and California, which publish long lists of certified and registered languages, both leave it off. Courts therefore use a qualified Marathi interpreter, and we confirm with the clerk what the bench will accept before you book. Depositions and family matters make up most of it, with the occasional employment dispute where a spouse's testimony turns on a nuance of Marathi. Prism is a private agency and not a vendor appointed by any court, and we say that to every clerk who asks.

Certified Marathi Translation for USCIS

Maharashtra records are usually bilingual, and USCIS wants the whole page. A birth certificate from a Municipal Corporation, a Gram Panchayat or a Sub-Registrar follows the state template in Devanagari, often with English printed alongside, and a translator who copies the English half and calls it done has left the Marathi seals, the handwritten remarks and the registration details untranslated. The second problem is the language label: a Hindi translator reads Marathi Devanagari fluently and gets it wrong, so we assign Marathi translators. Then there are the names. A Maharashtrian name is given name, father's name (or husband's, after marriage), then surname, which is why a woman's school leaving certificate and her marriage record will not match; and since May 2024 the state requires the mother's name on new documents as well. We spell to the passport and note every variant. Degree certificates and transcripts from Maharashtra universities for H-1B and I-140 petitions are the other steady stream, and older land or family records in the Modi script need a translator who can read it. Each translation carries a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy; details at certified translation.

Client Reviews

Prism Linguistics is rated 4.6 out of 5 across 67 client reviews for its interpreting and translation work in the United States. That is the company-wide figure; we do not publish a separate rating per language because there is no honest way to measure one. Questions we get asked

My mother is visiting from Pune and has a hospital appointment tomorrow. Can you send a Marathi interpreter?
Usually, yes. Our only office is in New York, but our Marathi interpreters work nationwide, so we assign one based near the hospital where possible and connect one by video within the hour where not. Tell the hospital you need Marathi, not Hindi, and that federally funded providers must supply one at no cost.
Why does my Maharashtra birth certificate need translating when half of it is already in English?
Because the seals, the registrar's remarks, the handwritten entries and often the parents' names are in Marathi, and USCIS requires the full document translated. We translate every field on the page, keep the issuing authority exactly as printed and deliver it with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy.
My surname changed at marriage and so did my middle name. Will USCIS reject my documents?
Not if the translation explains it. In Maharashtra a married woman's middle name changes from her father's given name to her husband's, so her school and marriage records differ legitimately. We spell to the passport, note the earlier form as it appears on each original, and the adjudicator can see the sequence.
