Malagasy is the kind of language a court clerk searches for at four in the afternoon and finds nobody. The community in the US is small and scattered, the interpreters are fewer still, and a good share of the demand is a single hearing or a single USCIS appointment in a city with no Malagasy speaker for a hundred miles. Our office is in New York and our Malagasy interpreters work from wherever they live, so most assignments are by phone or video, with in-person attendance where one is within reach.
Which Madagascar? Official Malagasy is the Merina speech of Antananarivo and the central highlands; it is what the schools teach and what most speakers use in public. The coasts speak differently. A Sakalava speaker from the west or a Betsimisaraka speaker from the east uses sounds and everyday words a highland interpreter has to reach for, and with an older person from a coastal town the reach becomes a gap. So we ask at intake where the person grew up and, where the answer is the coast, look for an interpreter from there.
The other trap is French. Many adults from Madagascar speak it, and a court or clinic that cannot find Malagasy will book a French interpreter and call it done. That is fine for filling in a form. It is not fine for testimony, a medical history or an asylum narrative, all of which are told in the language a person dreams in. No state certifies court interpreters in Malagasy, and a qualified interpreter is what the court will accept.
Most of our Malagasy assignments are immigration: green card interviews for a spouse or parent, naturalization interviews and asylum interviews. At an asylum interview the officer is listening for consistency and detail, and an interpreter who tidies a rambling answer into a neat one has altered the evidence. We brief every Malagasy interpreter to render exactly what is said, hesitations included, and we never let a relative sit in that chair. Where the applicant's first language is a coastal variety we say so on the booking rather than hoping the highland standard will do.
Courts come to Prism for Malagasy because their own rosters do not have it. The request is usually a criminal arraignment, a family case or a civil deposition, often with the interpreter appearing by video because the nearest Malagasy speaker is in another state. We confirm with the court what it will accept for a language with no certification exam, arrange the connection and brief the interpreter on the case type. We are a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor, and we say so to every clerk who asks.
A hospital that takes federal funding must provide a Malagasy interpreter at no cost to the patient, and in practice the request comes from the family after a French-speaking staff member has been tried. Video reaches the bedside fastest. For a diagnosis conversation or a consent form we would rather the patient hear it in their own regional Malagasy than in polished French, and we say that to the care team when they ask why French will not do.
Madagascar prints its records in two languages, and both have to be translated. A birth is declared to the civil status officer of the commune, or under the 2018 civil status law to the head of the fokontany, the neighbourhood unit below it, and the commune's register produces the full copie de l'acte de naissance. The shorter bulletin de naissance is a summary and is not what USCIS wants. Both come on preprinted French and Malagasy forms, filled in by hand in whichever language the officer preferred that day, with commune and fokontany stamps that carry place names an English reader cannot guess. We translate the French, the Malagasy and every stamp, and keep the commune and fokontany names exactly as printed. Malagasy personal names are long, and an old record often abbreviates a name that the passport writes out in full; we spell to the passport and note the variant so the adjudicator sees why the two differ.
