Mayotte is a French department in the Indian Ocean, so a Mahorian case has a French side and a Shimaore side, and the useful question is which one a given task needs. French runs the schools and the offices there, so for a younger person a French interpreter is often the practical booking, and we will say so rather than sell a Shimaore one for its own sake. The Shimaore interpreter is for an older relative, or for evidence about a life lived in the language. Our office is in New York and the linguist joins from wherever the matter is, usually by video.

Mahorian Interpreting Services

About two in three people on Mayotte speak Shimaore, a Comorian variety with roots close to Swahili, but the island holds a second language that trips up a careless booking. Kibushi, spoken at the south and the northwest of the island, is a form of Malagasy and not Comorian at all, so a Kibushi speaker and a Shimaore interpreter will not meet. Even within Shimaore, a Comorian interpreter from one of the independent islands is not automatically a match. We ask which village the speaker comes from before we assign anyone.

The community here is very small. There is no local pool of Mahorian interpreters in any US city, so the work is almost always remote, and it is the kind of rare language a court or a hospital brings to us after its own list turns up empty. A Shimaore interpreter renders what is said and stays out of the way of it, which is the whole point when the record depends on the exact answer.

Mahorian Court Interpreter

No state runs a certification exam for court interpreters in Mahorian, so a court works from a qualified Shimaore interpreter, and with no local roster the assignment is by phone or video almost every time. Courts come to us for exactly this: a language their own list does not cover. We take the work from judges, attorneys and law firms directly, and we are plain about the limit of our role, since Prism is a private agency and sits on no court's vendor list.

Mahorian Medical Interpreter

In a clinic the wrong assumption is that French will always do. It often does for a younger patient, but an elderly Mahorais may have lived her whole life in Shimaore and follow French only in fragments. A provider that takes federal funding must supply a Shimaore interpreter for her at no charge, and the family is rarely told this. Video suits a consultation. We put a person in the room for a discharge talk or a mental-health assessment, where being present changes how much gets through.

Mahorian USCIS Interpreter

At a naturalization or adjustment interview the officer weighs the answer word for word, so the interpreter renders it exactly and adds nothing of his own. Asylum work in Shimaore is uncommon but not unheard of, and it holds the interpreter to the same discipline: keep the applicant's own words, do not smooth a hesitation, do not fill a pause. We never seat a bilingual relative in the interpreter's chair.

Certified Mahorian Translation for USCIS

A Mahorian document is a French document with a particular history behind the name on it. Mayotte keeps its civil records in French, so a birth, marriage or death record is an acte d'état civil in that language. The complication is older than the paper: until an ordinance of 8 March 2000 set up a standard civil registry in every commune, most people on Mayotte were recorded under local status, identified by a run of names with no fixed surname. A commission known as the CREC rebuilt and fixed those names between 2000 and the close of 2010.

So a Mahorian born before 2000 may carry a CREC decision beside the original record, under a name that does not match a school or hospital document. We translate the record and the CREC decision together, spell the name as the passport has it, and note the earlier form so an adjudicator can join the two. Where a page carries Shimaore text, we translate that itself. The full document service sits at certified translation.

Client Reviews

Prism Linguistics is rated 4.6 out of 5 across 67 client reviews for its interpreting and translation work in the United States. That is the company-wide figure; we do not publish a separate rating per language because there is no honest way to measure one. If a Mahorian assignment ever falls short, tell us and we put it right.

Questions we get asked

My Mayotte record comes with a CREC name ruling. Do you translate both?
Yes. Mayotte civil records are written in French, and a person born before 2000 often holds a decision of the CREC that fixed a surname and given names. We translate the record and that ruling together with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy, spell the name as your passport shows it, and note the earlier version for the adjudicator.
Is a Comorian interpreter from another island the same as a Mahorian one?
Not automatically. Mahorian means Shimaore, the Comorian variety of Mayotte, while Kibushi speakers on the island use a Malagasy language that is something else again. We confirm the speaker's variety and their village, then assign a Shimaore interpreter, usually by phone or video. No state certifies court interpreters in Mahorian, and Prism is a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor.
How fast can you arrange a Mahorian interpreter for a hearing or hospital visit?
Our only office is in New York and our Mahorian interpreters work nationwide, so phone or video is usually available the same day and an in-person booking goes to the nearest Shimaore speaker on the network. Because the community here is small, most Mahorian work runs remotely. Tell us the city, the date and the setting and we come back with a name.
