Macedonian Interpreter and Translator Services

Court, hospital and green card interpreting across the US by Macedonian interpreters, not Serbian or Bulgarian stand-ins, plus certified translation of register extracts in whichever country name they carry.

Prism Linguistics provides Macedonian interpreters for court hearings, depositions, medical appointments and USCIS interviews anywhere in the United States, in person, by phone or by video, together with USCIS-compliant certified translation of Macedonian civil records in whichever country name the document carries.

Macedonian is a small language in the US and a badly served one. Agencies that cannot find a Macedonian interpreter quietly send a Serbian or Bulgarian speaker and hope the difference does not surface, and in a hospital corridor it often does not. In a deposition it does. Our office is in New York and our Macedonian interpreters are placed around the country, so for an in-person hearing or appointment we assign one based near you, and by phone or video we can usually connect the same day.

Macedonian Interpreting Services

The Macedonian-speaking community in the US is measured in tens of thousands, not hundreds, and it sits in a few known places: the New York metropolitan area and northern New Jersey, the suburbs north of Detroit, Ohio's larger cities, Chicago and Fort Wayne. Second-generation Macedonian Americans speak English, so the Macedonian interpreter is booked for the older generation: a grandfather admitted after a fall, a mother at a nursing home assessment, a fiancee at a K-1 interview, a witness in a family or property case with ties to Bitola or Tetovo.

Close is not the same. Macedonian sits between Serbian and Bulgarian, and a speaker of either can follow a Macedonian conversation. Under questioning the gaps open: verb tenses that Macedonian marks and Serbian does not, the definite article, courtroom vocabulary that differs word for word. We book Macedonian interpreters for Macedonian, full stop. And because a quarter of North Macedonia's citizens are ethnic Albanians, we ask a speaker from Tetovo, Gostivar or Struga which language they want to testify in before we assign anyone.

Macedonian Court Interpreter

No state has a certification exam for Macedonian court interpreters, and the national oral exam built with the National Center for State Courts covers Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian but stops there. Courts therefore use a registered or otherwise qualified Macedonian interpreter and decide what qualifies, which is a conversation to have with the clerk before the hearing rather than on the day. Send us the court, the case type and the date and we tell you what that bench will accept and who we can put in front of it. Much of our Macedonian legal work is depositions and family court, and the interpreter often translates the exhibits too. We work for courts, attorneys and law firms as a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor.

Macedonian Medical Interpreter

Hospitals that take federal funding must provide a Macedonian interpreter at no cost to the patient, and the patient is usually elderly. Ask for one at admission rather than at discharge. Video covers a medication review or a specialist consult well; for a capacity assessment, hospice planning or a conversation about a diagnosis we send a Macedonian medical interpreter in person, because the older patient reads the room as much as the words. The son who offers to interpret means well and will soften the news. That is the doctor's call to make, not his.

Macedonian USCIS Interpreter

Green card interviews for a spouse or parent from North Macedonia are the routine assignment, along with naturalization interviews where an older applicant qualifies for the English-test exemption. The officer wants the applicant's answer as spoken; the interpreter adds nothing and explains nothing, including when the answer is wrong. We brief every Macedonian USCIS interpreter on exactly that, and we do not send a relative, since the officer can turn them away and the appointment is lost.

Macedonian Translation Services

Certified Macedonian Translation for USCIS

Read the header before anything else. A record issued before February 2019 names the Republic of Macedonia; anything issued since the Prespa Agreement names the Republic of North Macedonia, and a family file routinely holds one of each. Both are valid and both must be translated as printed; a translator who modernizes the old header creates a discrepancy USCIS will query. The documents are the izvod extracts from the registers of births, marriages and deaths, issued by the Registry Office, and older ones may be handwritten in Cyrillic. Names cause the second problem. Since 2008 passports romanize without diacritics, so Ch, Sh and Zh replace the letters a diploma or an older certificate still carries; we follow the passport spelling and note the variant. Where the applicant is an ethnic Albanian citizen the document is bilingual, and we translate both columns and say so on the certificate. The full document service is at certified translation.

Questions we get asked

How fast can you get a Macedonian interpreter to a hospital or hearing in my city?
Our only office is in New York and our Macedonian interpreters work nationwide, so for an in-person hearing or appointment we assign one based near you, and phone or video is usually available the same day. Because Macedonian is a small language, give us as much notice as the setting allows and tell us the town the speaker is from.
Do you translate Macedonian documents written in Cyrillic by hand?
Yes. Older izvod extracts and church records are often handwritten in Cyrillic. We translate every field, stamp and margin, keep the issuing office and the country name exactly as printed, spell names to the passport and deliver the translation with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy.
Can you interpret for a naturalization interview in Macedonian?
Yes. Applicants who qualify for the age and residence exemption from the English test may bring an interpreter, and we send a Macedonian interpreter who renders the officer's questions and the applicant's answers as spoken, without prompting. Tell us the field office and the date and we confirm who is available.
