Luo, on this page, means Dholuo, the language of the Luo of western Kenya and northern Tanzania. It is worth saying at the outset, because the name Luo also covers a broader Western Nilotic family, with Acholi, Lango and Alur among the Ugandan branches, so a request that just reads Luo can bring the wrong interpreter. Dholuo has around five million speakers, and the Luo were Kenya's fourth-largest community at the 2019 census. Most Kenyan Luo of working age manage in English or Swahili, so the person who needs a Luo interpreter is usually an elderly parent, or a witness giving evidence about a rural childhood. Dholuo, and which Dholuo. Confirm the country first, so a Ugandan Acholi or Lango speaker is not booked as Luo, or the reverse. Within Dholuo there are two regional dialects, Kisumu-South Nyanza and Boro-Ukwala, sometimes called Trans-Yala, and we note which at intake because a witness is more precise in their own. For Tanzanian speakers from around Tarime we also check whether the day's paperwork or testimony is really Dholuo or Swahili, since the two turn up together in one family. Luo is the sort of language courts reach us for when a certified interpreter simply cannot be found.
No state runs a court certification exam in Luo, so a court works from a qualified Dholuo interpreter rather than a certified one, and in most parts of the country the session is arranged by phone or video. Give us the court, the case type and the speaker's home area and we confirm what the bench will accept, settling the dialect and the country before the date. We take work from courts, attorneys and law firms directly, as a private agency and not a court-appointed vendor.
A hospital or clinic that takes federal funding has to provide a Luo interpreter at no cost to the patient, and most families never hear that it is their right. The patient is usually elderly, and a grown child who interprets well enough at home is not the person you want relaying a diagnosis or a consent form. Video handles a specialist review or a follow-up well; for a mental health assessment or difficult news we try to put a Dholuo interpreter in the room, and use a video link when speed matters more.
Naturalization and adjustment-of-status interviews are the routine USCIS work, and the asylum interview is where it turns serious. The Luo interpreter's job is to give the officer each answer as it was spoken, the dates and place names left intact, because the officer is weighing the exact words. An interpreter who tidies a hesitation, or a relative who softens a hard answer, tells the officer a different story than the one given. We brief for plain rendering, confirm the Dholuo dialect at intake and keep bilingual relatives out of the chair.
Kenyan Luo records come in English, and Tanzanian ones may be in Swahili, so a Luo filing is rarely a Dholuo translation from cover to cover. A Kenyan family from the lake counties, Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay or Migori, holds a birth certificate in English from the Civil Registration Services; a Tanzanian family from Tarime in the Mara Region holds one from RITA, the Registration, Insolvency and Trusteeship Agency, and that record may call for a Swahili translator rather than a Luo one. What a Luo translator genuinely handles is the Dholuo material: a sworn affidavit, a chief's letter, a baptism card, and the Luo names threaded through the English papers. One recurring headache is a single name that appears one way on a baptism card, differently on a school leaving certificate and differently again on the passport.
