Lomwe is a small language on this site, and we will not pretend otherwise. It is a home language of northern Mozambique and southern Malawi, spoken by families who almost never carry a document written in it. Most Lomwe bookings are for an older relative, or for a witness recalling a rural childhood; speakers of working age usually manage in Portuguese or English. Our office is in New York, and because in-person Lomwe linguists are scarce in the United States, most assignments run by phone or video, arranged from a nationwide network.
Mozambique Lomwe or Malawi Lomwe? We ask first. The two were long counted as one language, but Ethnologue has listed them separately since 2005 because they are not mutually intelligible; of the roughly 2.5 million Lomwe speakers recorded in 2017, about twice as many are in Mozambique as in Malawi. Put a Malawi Lomwe interpreter with a Mozambican witness and the gap is more than an accent. So we confirm the country and district before assigning anyone. Lomwe is exactly the sort of rare language a court turns to us for when no one else can supply it.
No state runs a court certification exam in Lomwe, so a court works from a qualified Lomwe interpreter rather than a certified one, and in practice the session is usually held by phone or video because so few Lomwe linguists are based in the country. Give us the court, the case type and the speaker's district and we confirm what the bench will accept. At a naturalization or asylum interview the Lomwe interpreter's task is narrow and strict: give the officer each answer as it was spoken, and add nothing. The person in the chair is often elderly and testifying about events in a rural home area, so the interpreter has to be genuinely in the speaker's own Lomwe, not a Malawian standing in for a Mozambican or the reverse. For most Lomwe work remote is not a compromise, it is how the service reaches you at all. Here is the twist with Lomwe files: they are rarely in Lomwe. A Mozambican family brings a birth certificate, a certidão de nascimento, issued in Portuguese by a Conservatória do Registo Civil; a Malawian family brings a birth or marriage certificate in English from the National Registration Bureau. So the work is usually Portuguese into English, or a check of an English record, with the Lomwe names sitting inside it. The recurring snag is a single Lomwe name that a Portuguese-speaking registrar spelled one way and the passport office spelled another, so an officer sees two different people. Where a document does carry Lomwe, a church record or a sworn declaration, we translate the Lomwe itself.
