Kirundi Interpreter and Translator Services

USCIS, court and clinic interpreting across the US for resettled Burundian families, by a Kirundi speaker rather than a Kinyarwanda stand-in, plus certified translation of camp and civil records.

Prism Linguistics provides Kirundi interpreters for USCIS and asylum interviews, court hearings, resettlement casework and medical appointments anywhere in the United States, in person, by phone or by video, together with certified English translation of Burundian birth attestations and certificates, UNHCR registration cards and the camp records that resettled families carry.

Kirundi reaches us through refugee resettlement rather than through a consulate, and the people who speak it in the US are scattered wherever a resettlement agency placed them. Prism's office is in New York and our Kirundi interpreters are wherever those families landed, so an in-person assignment goes to the nearest linguist we have and a phone or video session can usually begin the same day.

Kirundi Interpreting Services

Most Kirundi speakers in the US descend from the Burundians who fled in 1972 and spent decades in camps in Tanzania; about 8,500 of them were resettled here from 2007 onward, and Arizona alone took 1,310 Burundians between 1998 and 2021. The generation that grew up in those camps is now the one at the clinic and the naturalization interview, and their children interpret for them constantly, which is what a hearing or a diagnosis should not rely on.

Kinyarwanda is nearly Kirundi. Nearly is the problem. The two languages sit on one continuum across Burundi and Rwanda and are largely mutually intelligible, so a clinic that cannot find Kirundi usually takes a Kinyarwanda speaker, and for a vaccination visit that is fine. For testimony or an asylum account it is not, because the vocabulary for officials, documents, dates and money diverges, and those are the words a case turns on. We assign a Kirundi interpreter for anything on the record, after asking which country and camp the speaker came from.

Kirundi USCIS Interpreter

Resettled Burundians arrive with status and move on to the green card and then to citizenship, so the USCIS work in Kirundi is the adjustment interview and, above all, the naturalization interview, where an elder who qualifies for the English exemption still has to answer questions through an interpreter. In that room the interpreter renders the Kirundi answer as it was given, without the softening a relative would add or the tidying an officer might prefer. We brief every Kirundi interpreter on that before the appointment.

Kirundi Court Interpreter

No state runs a certification exam in Kirundi, which means there is no certified Kirundi court interpreter anywhere in the country and a court that needs one appoints a qualified interpreter on experience. Courts come to a private agency for a language like this, and we are candid that Prism is a private agency and not a vendor appointed by any court. We settle with the clerk in advance what the bench will accept.

Kirundi Medical Interpreter

A federally funded clinic or hospital must provide a Kirundi interpreter at no cost to the patient, and in practice the patient is handed a teenager from the waiting room. The appointments that matter are the ones a teenager should never carry: a prenatal visit, a psychiatric assessment for a parent who spent thirty years in a camp. Video is the realistic option in most resettlement cities; where we have a Kirundi interpreter nearby, we send one in person for the long conversations.

Certified Kirundi Translation for USCIS

A Burundian file is written in French with Kirundi names, and the document that stands in for a birth certificate depends on the year. Burundi's civil registers opened in April 1980, so someone born before then usually holds an attestation de naissance and someone born after holds an acte de naissance, with extracts issued by the communal office of the place of birth; only the full copy is the civil status record itself. Label an attestation a birth certificate and USCIS may answer with a Request for Evidence. We keep the exact title, translate every stamp, and add a note explaining the distinction.

Then there are the camp papers. A family that spent decades in Tanzania holds a UNHCR registration card, ration and medical cards, and a birth record for a child born in exile, sometimes with a January 1 date of birth assigned because nobody knew the real one. None of these is a birth certificate; each is translated and titled as what it is. A Kirundi name can be spelled three ways across the passport, the camp card and a US record, so we spell to the passport and note the variant. The service is at certified translation.

Client Reviews

Prism Linguistics is rated 4.6 out of 5 across 67 client reviews for its interpreting and translation work in the United States. That is the company-wide figure; we do not publish a separate rating per language because there is no honest way to measure one. If a Kirundi assignment ever falls short, tell us and we put it right.

Questions we get asked

Can you get a Kirundi interpreter to a small resettlement city?
By phone or video, yes, usually the same day. Our only office is in New York and our Kirundi interpreters are spread thinly across the country, so for an in-person hearing we assign the nearest one and tell you at the outset whether travel is involved.
Does a naturalization interview for my Burundian mother need a Kirundi interpreter?
If she qualifies for the English exemption on age and years as a permanent resident, she may take the interview in Kirundi through an interpreter. We supply one who renders each answer exactly, which a relative who wants to help rarely manages.
What does a certified Kirundi translation of a January 1 birth date look like?
We translate the date exactly as printed on the camp or UNHCR record, without correcting it, and add a translator's note that the document itself carries that date. Many children born in the Tanzanian camps were assigned January 1 because the real date was unknown, and adjudicators have seen it before.
