Kinyarwanda reaches the United States mostly through the refugee program, and the people who speak it are as often Congolese as Rwandan. Most Congolese refugees resettled here in the last decade came from the Kivu provinces through camps in Rwanda, Tanzania and Burundi, and Kinyarwanda, or a variety close enough to it, is what they speak at home. Our office is in New York and our Kinyarwanda interpreters work nationwide, in person near you or by phone and video, which can usually be connected the same day.

Kinyarwanda Interpreting Services

Resettlement has put Kinyarwanda speakers in cities that had no East African community before: Louisville and Lexington, Nashville, Phoenix and Tucson, Boise, Salt Lake City, Buffalo, Syracuse, Erie, Columbus, Grand Rapids and Houston. Congolese nationals were the largest single group admitted to the US refugee program in fiscal year 2023, and each arriving family generates the same sequence of appointments: health screening, school enrollment, benefits interviews, and years later a green card or naturalization interview.

Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Kinyabwisha, Kinyamulenge: one continuum, four labels. A Kinyarwanda interpreter can generally work with a Burundian or a Congolese speaker, because they are varieties of one language. What differs is the vocabulary of officials, money and paperwork, and a Congolese speaker may switch to Swahili for exactly those topics. So we ask the country of origin and the camp, and we tell you when a Swahili interpreter would serve better.

Kinyarwanda Medical Interpreter

Medical work is the bulk of Kinyarwanda interpreting: the domestic health screening every refugee gets within weeks of arrival, then prenatal care, pediatrics, and the chronic conditions that went untreated in camp. Any clinic that takes federal funding must provide a Kinyarwanda interpreter free of charge, and families are rarely told. Phone lines rarely carry Kinyarwanda, so hospitals reach for Swahili or French and lose the grandmother in the room. We send an interpreter in person for maternity care, mental health assessments and consent discussions, and by video for follow-ups.

Kinyarwanda USCIS Interpreter

A resettled family reaches USCIS a year after arrival for adjustment of status and again five years on for naturalization, and by then the children speak English and the parents are asked to bring an interpreter who is not one of them. Asylum claims from Rwanda itself are fewer but serious, and turn on the applicant's exact words about a militia, a prison or a relative. We brief every Kinyarwanda interpreter to render the answer as spoken, without the rounding-off a relative supplies.

Kinyarwanda Court Interpreter

No state certifies court interpreters in Kinyarwanda, so a court uses a registered or otherwise qualified interpreter, and in a resettlement city the local roster usually has none. That is why courts come to us. We supply a Kinyarwanda interpreter the judge can question on the record, we work directly with courts, attorneys and law firms, and we are a private agency rather than a court-appointed vendor.

Kinyarwanda Translation Services

Certified Kinyarwanda Translation for USCIS

A resettled family's file is camp paperwork more than civil records: a UNHCR or Government of Rwanda proof of registration, a refugee identity card, ration and medical cards from Mahama or the Tanzanian camps, and a Rwandan record for a child born in exile. Each is translated as the document it is, and a registration card is never relabeled as a birth certificate.

Rwanda has two birth certificates and one document that is not. The acte de naissance and the extrait d'acte de naissance are the legal records, issued by the sector civil registrar and now through the Irembo portal, and they may be in Kinyarwanda, French or English. The attestation de naissance that many families carry is a sworn declaration, closer to a birth affidavit, and the US Embassy in Kigali will not take it in place of a certificate. We keep the title as printed, add a note explaining the difference, and translate every field, stamp and margin, with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy. The full service is at certified translation.

Client Reviews

Prism Linguistics is rated 4.6 out of 5 across 67 client reviews for its interpreting and translation work in the United States. That is the company-wide figure; we do not publish a separate rating per language because there is no honest way to measure one. If a Kinyarwanda assignment ever falls short, tell us and we put it right.

Questions we get asked

Can a resettlement agency book a Kinyarwanda interpreter for a whole day of appointments?
Yes. Tell us the schedule and the city and we assign one Kinyarwanda interpreter to cover the health screening, school enrollment and benefits interviews back to back, in person where one is based nearby and by video where not.
My client speaks Kinyamulenge from South Kivu. Do I book Kinyarwanda?
Yes. Kinyamulenge is a variety within the Kinyarwanda-Kirundi continuum and a Kinyarwanda interpreter will follow it, though we ask about the camp and region so we can match as closely as possible. If the client prefers Swahili for official matters, as many Congolese do, we can send a Swahili interpreter instead.
Do you translate camp ration cards and UNHCR documents for a green card application?
Yes. Proof of registration, refugee identity cards and ration or medical cards from the camps are often the only record of a family's identity and dates, and USCIS accepts them when translated in full. We translate every field, stamp and handwritten entry, keep the document title exactly as issued, and sign a Certificate of Translation Accuracy.
