Kaonda, more often written Kaonde, is a Bantu language of Zambia's North-Western Province, spoken around Solwezi, Kasempa and the neighbouring districts, and the community in the United States is very small. Most working-age Zambians manage in English, so the person who actually needs a Kaonda interpreter is an elderly relative, a patient explaining symptoms, or a witness whose account has to be exact. Our office is in New York, the interpreters are few and scattered, and for a language this scarce most assignments run by phone or video.
Lunda and Luvale are not Kaonda, however close the map makes them look. The North-Western Province has no single dominant language: Kaonda, Lunda and Luvale are spoken side by side, and they are not interchangeable, so a booking that just says the speaker is from that part of Zambia tells us less than it seems to. We confirm the language itself, not the region, before we assign.
Because in-person Kaonda interpreters in the country are so few, most of this work is remote, and we treat that as the normal way to reach the language rather than a compromise. It is the kind of rare language a court or a hospital comes to us for after drawing a blank elsewhere, and we would rather place a well-matched interpreter over video than an approximate one in the room.
