Kanjobal Interpreter and Translator Services

Immigration court, asylum office and hospital interpreting across the US for Q'anjob'al speakers from Huehuetenango, direct into English wherever the setting allows.

Prism Linguistics provides Kanjobal (Q'anjob'al) interpreters for immigration court, credible fear and asylum interviews, criminal and family hearings and medical appointments anywhere in the United States, in person, by phone or by video, together with certified translation of the Spanish RENAP records and Kanjobal-language evidence in a Guatemalan file.

Kanjobal is the language courts cannot find, which is why immigration judges, public defenders and asylum attorneys call a private agency. A hearing set for a Spanish interpreter stalls the moment the respondent answers in Q'anjob'al. Our office is in New York and our Kanjobal interpreters are placed near the communities that need them, in South Florida, Southern California and the Southeast, so we assign one based near the court or clinic, and by phone or video we can usually connect the same day.

Kanjobal Interpreting Services

The demand map follows the migration. Kanjobal families left the Cuchumatán highlands of Huehuetenango during the civil war of the 1980s and settled around the farm towns of Palm Beach County and in Los Angeles, and newer arrivals have joined relatives there or moved on to poultry and construction work in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and the Carolinas. The immigration courts in Miami, Orlando, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Memphis therefore see Kanjobal cases every week.

Most Kanjobal speakers are logged as Spanish speakers. A man who learned enough Spanish to work a job site cannot explain in it why he fled, and an intake form that says Spanish sends the wrong interpreter to the most important interview of his life. We ask the municipality before anything else: Santa Eulalia, Soloma and Barillas point to Kanjobal; San Miguel Acatán points to Akateko, a separate language a Kanjobal interpreter cannot cover; Chuj and Popti' are relatives, not substitutes.

Kanjobal Immigration Court Interpreter

Immigration court is where most Kanjobal assignments happen. The court's own contract interpreters often cannot cover the language, so the judge either continues the case or accepts an interpreter the attorney brings, sometimes through a Spanish relay in which a Kanjobal interpreter renders into Spanish and a second interpreter into English. Relay doubles the chance of error; we supply direct Kanjobal to English interpreters wherever the court allows it and a relay only when you agree to it. No state certifies court interpreters in Kanjobal, so for state criminal, family and dependency hearings the court works from registered or otherwise qualified interpreters. We tell attorneys plainly that Prism is a private agency and not a court-appointed vendor.

Kanjobal Asylum Interview Interpreter

A credible fear screening or an affirmative asylum interview turns on detail: the date of a threat, the name of the group, why the family could not move away. The applicant is describing violence in a language with its own way of marking who did what to whom, and a Kanjobal interpreter who tidies the grammar into Spanish-shaped sentences changes the account. We brief every interpreter to render what was said, pauses and repetitions included, and to flag a word that has no English equivalent rather than pick the nearest one.

Kanjobal Medical Interpreter

Any hospital or clinic that takes federal funding must provide a Kanjobal interpreter at no cost, and the county hospitals in Palm Beach County and Los Angeles know the language by name. Prenatal care, pediatric visits and workplace injuries are the routine settings, and a child or a foreman is too often the interpreter. Video reaches a rural clinic in Georgia or Tennessee where no in-person Kanjobal interpreter exists; we send someone in person for a surgery consent, a mental health assessment or a diagnosis the patient needs to hear from a person in the room.

Kanjobal Translation Services

Certified Kanjobal Translation for USCIS

Kanjobal translation is really two jobs. The first is Spanish: RENAP, Guatemala's civil registry, issues the birth certification and the DPI identity card in Spanish, and the certified English translation goes from that text. What a Kanjobal translator adds is the note that explains it, because a birth registered years late from a parent's memory, or a name respelled by a clerk who spoke no Q'anjob'al, leaves a mismatch between the paper and the applicant's own account that a judge will notice. The second job is the Kanjobal material itself: a recorded threat, a letter from a community authority. We transcribe it in Q'anjob'al using the spelling of the Academia de Lenguas Mayas de Guatemala, translate it into English, and identify the variety and the speaker's municipality on the signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy. The full document service is at certified translation.

Client Reviews

Prism Linguistics is rated 4.6 out of 5 across 67 client reviews for its interpreting and translation work in the United States. That is the company-wide figure; we do not publish a separate rating per language because there is no honest way to measure one. If a Kanjobal assignment ever falls short, tell us and we put it right.

Questions we get asked

Can you supply a Kanjobal interpreter for a hearing outside Florida or California?
Yes. Our only office is in New York and our Kanjobal interpreters work nationwide, so for a hearing in Atlanta, Memphis, Charlotte or anywhere else we assign one based as near as the language allows and otherwise appear by video. Tell us the court, the date and the respondent's municipality in Huehuetenango.
Do you provide direct Kanjobal to English interpreting or only relay through Spanish?
Direct wherever the court or the officer permits it. Relay interpreting through Spanish adds a second interpreter and a second chance of error, so we use it only when the setting requires it and you have agreed. Either way the interpreter is a Kanjobal speaker matched to the respondent's area, not a Spanish interpreter guessing.
Can you translate a RENAP birth certificate and explain a discrepancy in it?
Yes. The RENAP certification is in Spanish and we translate it exactly as printed. Where the applicant's Kanjobal account of a name or date differs from the record, we add a translator's note that explains the likely cause, such as late registration or a clerk's respelling, so the discrepancy is addressed before an officer or judge raises it.
