Nobody books a Herero interpreter by accident. The call comes from an immigration attorney, a court clerk or a hospital that has already tried the usual providers and found that Otjiherero is not on their list. That is the kind of request our office in New York exists for. The Herero-speaking population in this country is small and scattered, so most assignments run by video, and when a case genuinely needs a person in the room we say honestly how long that will take to arrange.
Namibia counted about 179,000 Otjiherero speakers at its 2023 census, under six percent of a country whose official language is English. That single fact shapes every booking. The Namibian who arrives at a US hearing has almost always been schooled in English and does not need us. The Herero interpreter is for the parent who came on a family petition, the elder whose evidence concerns a childhood in the Omaheke or Kunene regions, or the applicant who can manage an English conversation but should not be giving sworn testimony in it.
Say Herero, Mbanderu or Himba and we send the same person. The eastern Mbanderu speech and the Himba speech of the north-west differ from standard Otjiherero mostly in pronunciation, and the shared written standard has narrowed the gap further, so a single qualified Herero interpreter serves all three. What we do ask is whether the speaker is comfortable in English for part of the session, because a session that switches between the two needs an interpreter who is briefed to keep the record straight.
Naturalization and adjustment interviews are where most Herero requests begin. USCIS allows the applicant to bring an interpreter, and the officer expects that interpreter to render each question and answer without adding, explaining or shortening. Bringing a nephew who speaks both languages is the common mistake: he will summarise, and a summarised answer is a different answer. We supply a Herero interpreter who has done this before, by phone or video where the field office permits it and in person where it does not.
No state offers a court certification exam in Herero, and none is likely to. Courts therefore proceed with a qualified Herero interpreter, and this is exactly the rare-language situation in which courts have come to Prism because no other supplier could fill it. A hospital that takes federal funding owes the patient an interpreter at no charge, and for Otjiherero that almost always means a video connection to one of our linguists. Video is well suited to a consultation, a consent discussion or a discharge briefing. It is less suited to an elderly patient who has never used a screen, so for a long admission we look for an in-person option and are frank about whether one exists nearby.
A Namibian civil file is mostly in English already. Birth, marriage and death certificates come from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security in English and go into a USCIS packet as they are. The Otjiherero appears in the supporting layer: a sworn declaration written by hand, a letter from a traditional leader confirming a marriage or a birth, a church baptismal entry, or a relative's statement that carries the weight of a claim. Those pages need a full certified translation, and a partial or summarised one invites a Request for Evidence.
