Nobody books a Finnish interpreter casually. The request comes from an attorney with a Finnish witness and a deposition date, a hospital with a patient who has stopped answering in English, or a family with a green card interview next week, and in each case the caller has already discovered how few there are. Our office is in New York; our Finnish interpreters work nationwide, in person where a linguist is based near you and by phone or video everywhere else.

Finnish Interpreting Services

Finnish Americans are concentrated where they settled a century ago: Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the Iron Range and the Twin Cities in Minnesota, the Puget Sound cities, Astoria in Oregon, the towns around Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and the retirement enclave around Lake Worth, Florida. The language itself has all but gone from those places; the census counts far more people of Finnish ancestry than speakers. Today's speakers are recent arrivals in New York, the Bay Area and Seattle, plus their visiting parents, and it is the parents and the very old who need us.

Finnish or Swedish? Check before you book. Roughly one Finn in twenty grew up Swedish-speaking, along the west coast and in the south, and a Swedish-speaking Finn's documents, and often their preference under stress, will be Swedish. A Finnish interpreter will not help them. We ask at intake and assign a Swedish interpreter where that is the honest answer.

Finnish Court Interpreter

No state certifies court interpreters in Finnish and the federal exam does not cover it, so a court uses a registered or otherwise qualified interpreter, and most have never needed one. The live demand is in commercial litigation: a Finnish engineer or executive deposed in a US patent, contract or product case. These witnesses usually speak good English, and attorneys book a Finnish interpreter anyway, because good English under friendly questions turns approximate under hostile ones, and the other side wants a transcript full of approximations. Some attorneys book us as a check interpreter to sit beside the opposing party's. Prism is a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor.

Finnish Medical Interpreter

The medical bookings are for the old. A Finnish American in her nineties in Hancock or Lake Worth keeps English for decades and then, after a stroke or as dementia advances, returns to the Finnish of her childhood, and the family cannot follow. A federally funded hospital or nursing facility must provide a Finnish interpreter at no cost. We send someone in person for a capacity assessment or a hospice conversation, by video for a routine visit, and we ask which part of Finland the patient came from, because Helsinki and Ostrobothnia are not quite the same Finnish.

Finnish USCIS Interpreter

Finnish USCIS work is the spouse or parent at an adjustment of status or naturalization interview: someone who could manage in English but is entitled to answer in Finnish and should. The interpreter renders the answer and nothing else, does not help with the civics questions or fill the pause while the applicant remembers a date. A spouse cannot interpret at the other's interview, which is usually when the family calls us. We send a neutral Finnish interpreter briefed for the format, by video where the field office permits it.

Finnish Translation Services

Certified Finnish Translation for USCIS

Finland makes translation easy for recent documents and hard for old ones. The population register agency issues current extracts in English on request, so a birth or marriage extract ordered today rarely needs us. A parish extract (virkatodistus) from the Evangelical Lutheran Church, a district court divorce or custody judgment, a university degree with its Finnish grading scale for an H-1B or EB-2 filing, a criminal record extract from the Legal Register Centre: those arrive in Finnish or Swedish and do. Every Finnish document carries the personal identity code, birth date plus a four-character suffix, and we reproduce it exactly, because it is the identifier USCIS matches on. Finnish place names and surnames appear inflected on certificates and must go back to their dictionary form on the translation, and ä and ö stay as the passport prints them. The work is delivered with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy; the full service is at certified translation.

Client Reviews

Prism Linguistics is rated 4.6 out of 5 across 67 client reviews for its interpreting and translation work in the United States. That is the company-wide figure; we do not publish a separate rating per language because there is no honest way to measure one. If a Finnish assignment ever falls short, tell us and we put it right.

Questions we get asked

The witness is a Swedish-speaking Finn. Do I book a Finnish or a Swedish interpreter?
Swedish. About one Finn in twenty is a native Swedish speaker, mostly from the west coast and the south, and their documents and their most precise speech will be Swedish. Tell us at intake and we assign a Swedish interpreter, which is an easier booking to fill.
Can a Finnish interpreter attend a deposition or hearing in my city?
Yes. Our only office is in New York and our Finnish interpreters work nationwide, so for an in-person deposition we assign one based near you where possible and by video where the parties agree. Because interpreters are scarce, give us the date and the subject matter as early as you can, and send the exhibits in advance.
Do you translate Finnish university degrees for H-1B or green card filings?
Yes. A Finnish degree certificate and transcript are usually issued in Finnish or Swedish, and we translate them with the grading scale explained in a translator's note, the personal identity code reproduced exactly and every stamp rendered. The translation comes with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy.
