Chamorro is the language of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, and every Chamorro speaker we work with is a US citizen. There is no immigration side to this page. The demand is an elder: a grandmother at a hospital in San Diego, a witness in a Guam probate case being deposed in Washington State, a veteran at a benefits hearing who is exact in Chamorro and approximate in English. Prism's only office is in New York; we book Chamorro interpreters nationwide, in person where one lives nearby and by phone or video otherwise.
The numbers explain the profile. Guam counted 34,598 Chamorro speakers in 1990 and 21,390 in 2020, and in the Northern Marianas most children now grow up in English; fluency has retreated to the grandparents, and the revitalization classes are for their grandchildren. Meanwhile the diaspora has grown. Southern California holds the largest Chamorro population outside the islands, with sizable communities in Washington, Texas, Nevada and Florida, so the request for a Chamorro interpreter can come from almost anywhere.
Guam or Saipan? We ask every time. The Guam and Northern Marianas varieties are close enough to work together, but spelling conventions and some vocabulary differ, and an elder is put at ease by an interpreter from home. On Saipan the neighbor language is Carolinian, and a family may use both; we confirm which one the speaker actually wants before assigning.
Most Chamorro bookings are medical. A provider that takes federal funds must supply a Chamorro interpreter without charge, and the request usually comes from an adult child who has been interpreting for a parent and has just realized that a diabetes management plan or a cancer diagnosis is more than they should be carrying. Video gets an interpreter to the bedside quickly. For a hospice conversation, a capacity assessment or a family meeting about long-term care, we send someone in person where a Chamorro interpreter is based close enough.
Land and probate generate the court work, because Guam and CNMI estates are argued over by heirs spread across the mainland, and an elder's testimony about who farmed which parcel in the 1960s is the evidence. No state certifies court interpreters in Chamorro, so a qualified interpreter is used, in the courtroom where possible and by video where not. Guam's Office of Vital Statistics and the Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation on Saipan issue their certificates in English; they are US records and go into any file as they are. What a Chamorro translator is actually for is the private paper an elder left behind: a handwritten will, a statement about a family's land, a church register entry, a sworn statement in a probate dispute. Older handwritten Chamorro uses spellings that pre-date today's orthography, and the honest translation keeps them and notes them rather than modernizing a name.
