Bulgarian is a small language in the United States with a very specific caseload: little asylum work, almost no criminal work, and a steady flow of civil litigation, family matters, credential evaluation and the green card interview of a Bulgarian spouse. Our office is in New York and our Bulgarian interpreters and translators are spread across the country, so for an in-person hearing or appointment we assign one based near you, and for phone or video we can usually connect the same day.

Bulgarian Interpreting Services

Around 100,000 people claim Bulgarian ancestry on Census estimates, and the working map is short: metropolitan Chicago is the largest community by a distance, then Los Angeles, New York and the Bay Area, with newer clusters in Las Vegas, Florida and the Washington suburbs. Bulgaria is also one of the biggest source countries for the J-1 summer work and travel programme, so resort towns from Ocean City to the Wisconsin Dells host Bulgarian students each summer, and the occasional injury or wage dispute follows.

The person who needs the interpreter is rarely the one who calls. A Bulgarian software engineer in Chicago does not need us. His mother visiting for six months does, when she ends up in an emergency room, and his wife may at her adjustment-of-status interview, where she follows the English but does not trust herself under questioning. Bulgarian has no dialect problem for interpreting purposes; the issue is register, and an interpreter who can move between a courtroom and a hospital bed.

Bulgarian Court Interpreter

Bulgarian is not among the languages with a national court-interpreter oral exam, so no state issues a certified Bulgarian court interpreter credential; courts use a registered or otherwise qualified interpreter, and the standard varies by county. Tell us the court and the case type and we confirm what that bench will accept before you book. The assignments we see are depositions in commercial disputes, custody hearings and the occasional personal injury trial. We take instructions from courts, attorneys and law firms, and we are a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor.

Bulgarian Medical Interpreter

Any hospital or clinic that takes federal funding must provide a Bulgarian interpreter at no cost, and a visiting parent on a tourist visa is entitled to one exactly as a resident is. The common bookings are an older relative admitted during a visit, a consent discussion before surgery and a discharge briefing the family would otherwise reconstruct from memory. Video handles a consultation well. We send someone in person for a mental health assessment, an oncology conversation or an elderly patient who is hard of hearing, because a face on a screen is where those go wrong.

Bulgarian USCIS Interpreter

The marriage-based adjustment interview generates most of our Bulgarian USCIS bookings, and the officer is testing consistency between two people's answers, not the applicant's English. A spouse who manages in English on a good day should still consider an interpreter, because a misunderstood date is a problem on the record. Naturalization interviews with the age-based English waiver are the other steady stream. Our Bulgarian interpreters render the answer exactly as given, and we never send a relative or a friend of the family to do it.

Certified Bulgarian Translation for USCIS

Most of our Bulgarian translation is document work: municipal birth and marriage certificates, divorce decrees, diplomas and transcripts for credential evaluators, criminal record certificates, and the employer letters and contracts that follow Bulgarian IT contractors and J-1 workers. A certificate comes from the municipality with its round seal and takes an apostille from the regional administration for use abroad; the EU multilingual extract already carries English headings but still needs its seal, its handwritten entries and its Bulgarian-only annotations translated. We translate the Bulgarian, leave the English alone and certify the whole page.

Transliteration is the trap. Bulgaria fixed a single romanisation system by law in 2009, so a current passport spells a name one way while a 1990s diploma or an older US record spells it another: Cvetan against Tsvetan, Iliya against Ilia. Bulgarian names also carry a patronymic middle name that US forms mistake for a surname. We spell to the passport, keep the patronymic where the original has it, and list every variant so the adjudicator connects the documents to one person. Every translation is signed with a Certificate of Translation Accuracy; the full document service is at certified translation.

Client Reviews

Prism Linguistics is rated 4.6 out of 5 across 67 client reviews for its interpreting and translation work in the United States. That is the company-wide figure; we do not publish a separate rating per language because there is no honest way to measure one. If a Bulgarian assignment ever falls short, tell us and we put it right.

Questions we get asked

Do you have Bulgarian interpreters outside Chicago?
Yes. Our only office is in New York and our Bulgarian interpreters work nationwide, so for an in-person deposition or appointment we assign one based near you, and phone or video reaches anywhere, usually the same day. Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and the Bay Area have the deepest coverage.
My Bulgarian diploma spells my name differently from my US passport. Will USCIS reject it?
Not if the translation handles it. Bulgaria changed its official transliteration in 2009, so older documents often show Mariya, Iliya or Cvetan where the passport shows Maria, Ilia or Tsvetan. We follow the passport spelling and add a translator's note listing each variant, which is what the officer or evaluator needs to connect the documents.
Can a Bulgarian interpreter attend a deposition by video?
Yes, and many depositions now run that way. We provide the interpreter by video for remote depositions and in person where the attorneys want everyone in the room. Tell us the platform and if you need consecutive or simultaneous interpretation.
