We will be honest about Breton before you book. Nearly every Breton speaker also speaks French, and for most appointments a French interpreter is the right call; we say so and arrange one. The person who needs Breton is the exception: an elderly relative from a farming village in Finistere, a witness recalling a childhood lived in Breton, an academic or a genealogist working with Breton-language material. Our office is in New York and Breton interpreters in this country are very few, so the work is almost always by video, with in-person only where one happens to be within reach.
Breton is shrinking fast, and that shapes who calls us. The 2024 survey run by TMO for the Region of Brittany put the number of speakers at about 107,000, half of what the same survey found in 2018, and in 2018 more than three quarters of them were over 60. So the Breton speaker who genuinely cannot manage in French is almost always old, and the appointment is usually medical or a family matter in court.
Vannetais or the rest? The Gwenedeg variety of south-east Brittany stands apart from the Kerne, Leon and Treger varieties spoken further west and north, enough that a speaker of one can lose the thread of the other. We ask which part of Brittany the person comes from and match the interpreter to it, rather than assuming any Breton speaker will do.
No US state runs a court certification exam in Breton, so a judge who needs one uses a qualified interpreter, and that interpreter joins by video. The cases are rare and specific: a guardianship or estate hearing involving an older relative, a deposition where a witness prefers to answer in the language they grew up in. Breton is precisely the kind of language a court calls us about after its own roster has come up empty. An elderly Breton speaker visiting family in the United States who ends up in hospital is the scenario we see most. Providers that take federal funding must supply an interpreter at no cost, and a French interpreter will cover the admission paperwork but may miss the patient's own account of symptoms if that account comes in Breton. Video is the practical answer: a Breton interpreter can join a consultation or a discharge conversation anywhere in the country the same day.
For Breton, remote is not a fallback; it is the service. A language with a few thousand speakers under 60 in all of Brittany does not have interpreters waiting in every US metro, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. A scheduled video session gives the interpreter time to confirm the speaker's variety, and a phone line covers a short call to a relative or a clinic follow-up. A certified Breton translation is, in almost every case, a certified French translation with a Breton name inside it. Brittany registers births, marriages and deaths in French: the mairie of the commune issues an acte de naissance, and USCIS wants the copie intégrale with both parents named in full rather than the short extrait. The Breton problem is spelling. A given name like Fañch carries a tilde that French registrars long refused; Quimper's town hall rejected it in 2017 and the Rennes court of appeal allowed it in 2018, so a Breton speaker can hold one spelling on the birth act and another on the passport. We translate the French record in full, keep the mairie as the issuing authority, spell to the passport and note the Breton form where the original shows it. Genealogical or academic Breton-language material is a separate job and we quote it separately. The document service is at certified translation.
