A Bicol booking almost always starts with a Tagalog interpreter who did not work. The adult children in this country speak English; the grandmother from Camarines Sur speaks Bikol, understands some Tagalog, and answered a doctor's questions with a nod that meant nothing. Our office is in New York and our Bicol linguists are spread thinly across the country, so most work is by video or phone and in-person where one is within reach. The first thing we ask is not the province. It is the town.

Bicol Interpreting Services

Bikol was the home language of roughly 1.03 million Philippine households at the 2020 census, and it is a group of languages rather than one. Central Bikol, the Bikol Naga of Camarines Sur, is the largest and the one most interpreters speak. Rinconada Bikol around Iriga, with about 385,000 speakers in 2010, and the varieties of Albay and Sorsogon are far enough apart that a Naga interpreter can leave an elderly Rinconada speaker behind. So we place the speaker on the map before we place the interpreter.

Most Bicolanos here will never need us. A working-age nurse or engineer from Legazpi speaks English and Tagalog and would be offended by the offer. The demand is for their parents, for an older relative on a visitor visa who falls ill, and for anyone giving detailed testimony in the language they think in. We say when Tagalog would do. When it would not, we assign for the variety.

Bicol Medical Interpreter

A hospital that takes federal funding owes the patient an interpreter at no cost, in the language the patient actually uses, and a Filipino nurse on the ward who speaks Tagalog does not discharge that duty for a Rinconada speaker. Consent for surgery, a cancer diagnosis, discharge instructions for an elderly patient: these are the appointments where a Bicol interpreter earns the booking. Video reaches any clinic in the country within hours, and it is usually the honest answer for a language this thinly spread.

Bicol Court Interpreter

No US state certifies court interpreters in any Bikol language, so a judge who needs one works with a qualified interpreter, almost always by video. Family matters and guardianship hearings involving an older relative are the typical case, along with the occasional deposition where a witness recalls events from Bicol in Bicol. Courts come to us for languages like this one, and we say plainly that we are a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor. Tell us the court and the speaker's town and we confirm the interpreter's variety before the date.

Bicol USCIS Interpreter

A parent petitioned under a family visa, or a grandparent at a naturalization interview under the age and residence exemption from the English test, still has to answer the officer's questions about names, dates and marriages. Families bring a relative who speaks Tagalog and half-remembers Bikol. Our interpreter renders each answer as the applicant gives it, in the Bikol they speak, and does not tidy or explain.

Bicol Translation Services

Certified Bicol Translation for USCIS

Very little of a Filipino applicant's file needs translating. Birth, marriage and death certificates come from the Philippine Statistics Authority on security paper and are already in English; a handful of older Spanish-format records are the exception. The Bicol sits in the supporting papers: an affidavit of late registration sworn by a grandparent in Naga, a letter from a relative in Legazpi backing a petition, a witness statement in a Rinconada dialect from Iriga. The variety on the page decides which translator we assign, because Rinconada and Bikol Naga are not read the same way. Each document is translated in full, names are spelled to the passport, and the translation carries a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy. The full service is at certified translation.

Client Reviews

Prism Linguistics is rated 4.6 out of 5 across 67 client reviews for its interpreting and translation work in the United States. That is the company-wide figure; we do not publish a separate rating per language because there is no honest way to measure one. If a Bicol assignment ever falls short, tell us and we put it right.

Questions we get asked

Do you send a Bicol interpreter in person or by video?
Mostly by video or phone. Bikol speakers who need an interpreter are few and scattered, and our only office is in New York. Where a Bicol interpreter of the right variety is based near the appointment we send them in person; otherwise video reaches any hospital or court the same day.
What is the difference between Bikol Naga and Rinconada for an interpreter?
Enough that we treat them as separate assignments. Bikol Naga is the Central Bikol of Camarines Sur and the variety most interpreters speak; Rinconada is the language of Iriga and the surrounding towns, and an elderly Rinconada speaker can struggle to follow a Naga interpreter. Tell us the town and we assign accordingly.
Can you translate a Bicol affidavit of late registration for a family petition?
Yes. That is the most common Bicol document we see, usually sworn by a grandparent to support a PSA record. We translate it in full, match the names to the passport, and provide a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy for the USCIS filing.
