Most requests for a Bhojpuri interpreter reach us as requests for a Hindi one that went wrong. The son booked Hindi for his mother, the appointment stalled, and someone finally asked what she actually speaks at home. Our office is in New York and our Bhojpuri linguists work across the country: for an in-person job we assign one based near you, and phone or video can usually be arranged the same day. The useful question comes first, though. Hindi, or Bhojpuri?
Bhojpuri is one of the largest languages in the world that almost nobody books an interpreter for, because it hides inside Hindi on every form. India's 2011 census counted 50.6 million speakers, Nepal about 1.6 million more, and a schooled speaker from Patna will get through a routine appointment in Hindi without complaint. The people who cannot are the ones the appointment is usually about: a parent brought over on a family visa, a Terai farmer in a removal hearing, a witness describing a village dispute. The vocabulary of home, land, sickness and money is where Bhojpuri and Hindi part ways, and that is exactly the vocabulary a hospital or a courtroom runs on.
Which side of the border? Bhojpuri from Bihar borrows from Hindi; Bhojpuri from the Nepal Terai borrows from Nepali. The difference is small in conversation and noticeable in testimony, so we match the interpreter to the speaker's side and tell you frankly when Hindi would serve just as well.
Hospital work is the largest share of our Bhojpuri bookings, and it is nearly always for an older relative. Any provider that takes federal funding must supply an interpreter at no cost, and a bilingual grandchild who rounds off a diagnosis to spare feelings does not meet that duty. Video handles a consultation or a medication review well; for an inpatient stay, a mental health assessment or an elderly patient who does not take to a screen, we send someone in person where a Bhojpuri interpreter is within reach.
No state runs a court certification exam in Bhojpuri, so a judge who needs one uses a qualified interpreter, and Bhojpuri is the kind of language courts come to us for when the Hindi interpreter on the roster turns out not to be enough. Tell us the court, the case type and the speaker's district and we confirm who we are sending before the hearing. We take assignments from courts, attorneys and law firms directly, and we are a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor.
At a naturalization or adjustment interview the applicant may bring their own interpreter, and families often bring a relative who speaks Hindi well and Bhojpuri badly. The officer is listening for exact answers about dates, addresses and marriages. Our interpreter renders each answer as given, in Bhojpuri if that is what the applicant speaks, without translating through Hindi first, and never softens or fills in for the applicant.
A Bhojpuri speaker's certificates are never in Bhojpuri. Birth records from Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh come from a municipal corporation or a gram panchayat registrar in Hindi; from the Nepal Terai the applicant brings a ward-office birth registration and a citizenship certificate in Nepali. The Bhojpuri is in the paperwork around them: a handwritten affidavit, a letter from a relative in the village, and occasionally old land papers in the Kaithi script that Bhojpuri once used. All of it is in Devanagari, and a translator who reads a Bhojpuri statement as careless Hindi gets it wrong. We assign a translator who knows the difference, translate each document in full, keep the issuing office as printed and spell every name to the passport. The service, with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy, is at certified translation.
Tell us the date, the city and the setting, or send a clear scan of the document. We reply with a fixed price and, for interpreting, a named linguist. Call +1 (833) 282 8883, email info@prismlinguistics.com, or use the quote form and you will hear back within 60 minutes during business hours.
Our only office is in New York, and our Bhojpuri interpreters work nationwide. For in-person work we assign someone based in or near the city. These are the areas where Bhojpuri work is concentrated; the full list of 288 cities is below it.
Prism Linguistics is rated 4.6 out of 5 across 67 client reviews for its interpreting and translation work in the United States. That is the company-wide figure; we do not publish a separate rating per language because there is no honest way to measure one. If a Bhojpuri assignment ever falls short, tell us and we put it right.
