Akan is the family name, and almost nobody who calls us asks for it by that name. They ask for Twi, or for Fante, or they say the client is Ghanaian and let us work out the rest. That is fine. Our job on the phone is to find out which Akan the speaker actually uses and which setting the interpreter is walking into, then match the two. Our office is in New York, and our Akan interpreters are based across the country, so an in-person job gets a linguist near you and a phone or video job is usually connected the same day.
Ghana runs on English at the counter and in the classroom, so a Ghanaian in their thirties who has lived here five years seldom needs an interpreter. The Akan interpreter is booked for the mother who came to join her children, the grandfather giving evidence in a family case, or the spouse at a green card interview whose English holds up until the questions get personal. Knowing that shapes how we staff the job: a patient, older-generation register, not a fast commercial one.
Twi or Fante? Settle it before you book. Asante Twi, Akuapem Twi and Fante are the three written forms of Akan and they carry on a conversation together without much trouble, but the everyday vocabulary shifts between Kumasi and Cape Coast, and under cross-examination or in a medical history a mismatch shows. We ask the speaker's home region at intake and assign on that basis.
No state runs a certification exam for Akan, Twi or Fante court interpreters, so a court appoints a registered or otherwise qualified interpreter and the judge rules on the record. Most Akan court assignments we see are family court, immigration court and the occasional deposition in a civil matter. Tell us the court, the case type and the speaker's home region and we confirm what that bench will accept before the date. A hospital or clinic that takes federal funding must provide an Akan interpreter at no cost to the patient, and an adult child who happens to speak Twi is not a substitute, however willing. The moment that matters is the serious diagnosis: an older Ghanaian patient who has managed in English for years will switch to Twi when the news is bad, and the family member interpreting will soften it. Green card and naturalization interviews are the most common Akan USCIS work, and the officer wants the applicant's own answer, not a helpful relative's improved version. An Akan interpreter who adds the explanation the applicant forgot, or trims a rambling reply, has changed the record. We brief every interpreter to render the answer as given and nothing more, and we do not seat a family member or a church friend as the interpreter at an interview.
The first thing we tell a Ghanaian client is that their certificates probably need no translation at all. Ghana issues birth certificates, the Ghana Card, marriage certificates and school results in English, and USCIS takes them as they come. Certified Akan translation is for what stands behind those certificates: a statutory declaration read to an elderly parent in Twi, a church marriage or baptism entry with Akan wording, a family head's letter in Fante confirming a relationship, a handwritten will, or a voice recording that a court or an asylum office wants transcribed and translated. We translate every line, state which Akan dialect the document is in, and deliver each with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy. Day names are the recurring problem. Kwame, Kofi, Ama and Akosua appear on some records and vanish from others, and a passport may list them in a different order. We spell every name to match the passport and note each variant on the original, so the translation does not create a discrepancy the applicant then has to explain.
