Yue Translators in Lexington

Lexington and Fayette County share a single consolidated government, the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, but the courts are not merged. Felonies, divorces, adoptions and larger civil suits go to the Fayette Circuit Court, Kentucky's 22nd Judicial Circuit, which includes a Family Court division; misdemeanors, traffic, small claims, evictions, probate and juvenile matters sit with the Fayette District Court. Prism serves courts, attorneys, doctors and private individuals.

Kentucky Refugee Ministries keeps a Lexington office and offers interpreting in Spanish, Swahili, Kirundi, Kinyarwanda, Arabic, Haitian Creole, Kurdish, Ukrainian, Bosnian, Pashto and Dari, a fair guide to who has settled here. Fayette County Public Schools runs a multilingual services office that translates school documents for families. Courts come to Prism for the rarer languages on that list, such as Kirundi and Kinyarwanda, which other providers cannot supply. Our only office is in New York; in-person work goes to a linguist based near Lexington.

Yue to English Translation Services in Lexington

A certified Yue translation is, on paper, a certified Chinese translation of a Hong Kong birth entry, a Guangdong hukou or a notarial certificate, and the Yue translator's craft is the name: reading the characters behind Cheung, Wong and Leung so the translation matches the passport.

Yue is the family; the documents are written Chinese. Yue is the branch of Chinese spoken in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hong Kong and Macau, with about 85 million speakers on recent figures, and Cantonese, the Guangzhou and Hong Kong variety, is its prestige form. Nobody writes an official document in spoken Yue. A Hong Kong applicant brings a birth certificate or certified copy of a birth entry from the Immigration Department's Births Registry, mostly bilingual already, so the work is the Chinese-only parts, the chops and any handwritten amendment. A Guangdong or Guangxi applicant brings the household register (hukou) and a notarial birth certificate from the local notary public office, in Simplified characters. The Yue layer is the name. A Hong Kong passport writes Cheung, Wong and Leung; the same characters on a mainland cousin's hukou come out Zhang, Huang and Liang in Pinyin, and an old US record may carry a Taishanese spelling. Our Yue translators anchor to the characters, match the passport, note every variant and sign a Certificate of Translation Accuracy.

Every certified Yue translation is a complete, word-for-word rendering with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy, prepared to meet USCIS requirements. It is done from a clear scan, so a client in Lexington gets the same translator, the same price and the same turnaround as one anywhere else in the country. About the Yue Language

Yue is the linguistic family name for Cantonese and its closely related varieties (including Toishanese), spoken by around 85 million people primarily in Guangdong province, Hong Kong, Macau, Guangxi, and the global Cantonese-speaking diaspora, see our Cantonese page for the major variety. The US Yue-speaking community is concentrated in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, and Boston.

Yue Interpreters in Lexington

Our Yue interpreters in Lexington are qualified, professional linguists who work in hospitals, state courts and USCIS offices, and every Yue interpreting request is answered by first asking where the speaker is from, because Cantonese and Taishanese are not interchangeable.

Which Yue? Cantonese and Taishanese are both Yue languages and are not mutually intelligible in practice. Taishanese, from the Siyi counties southwest of Guangzhou, was the language of most 19th-century emigrants from Guangdong to North America and had about 3.9 million speakers at home in 2012; in the United States it is the language of the oldest Chinatown generation, and a Cantonese interpreter sent to a ninety-year-old Taishanese patient catches most of it and misses the rest. So the Yue interpreter is assigned at intake by place: Hong Kong, Guangzhou, or a Siyi county. Cantonese has an NCSC court interpreter oral exam, and California, Pennsylvania, Arkansas and Indiana certify Cantonese court interpreters; no state certifies Taishanese, and a court will usually accept a qualified Taishanese interpreter once the need is explained, so tell us the court and we confirm. Hospitals that take federal funds must provide an interpreter in the Yue variety the patient actually speaks, at no cost. At USCIS the Yue interpreter renders each answer as given.

For an in-person assignment in Lexington we assign a Yue interpreter based in or near the city. Telephone and video interpreting can usually be arranged the same day. We serve courts, attorneys, hospitals, USCIS applicants and private individuals; we are a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor, and we say so up front.

How to Book a Yue Translator in Lexington

  1. Send the document or the appointment details. A phone photo is fine for a quote; a clean scan is needed for the certified copy. For interpreting, tell us the date, the setting and where the speaker is from.
  2. Get a fixed price within 60 minutes during business hours, and a named Yue linguist for interpreting work.
  3. Receive the translation by email as a signed PDF, with a paper copy by mail on request, or confirm the interpreter and the time.

Yue Translation in Lexington: FAQs

Is Yue the same as Cantonese?

Cantonese is the best-known Yue language, the variety of Guangzhou and Hong Kong, but Yue also includes Taishanese and the other varieties of Guangdong and Guangxi, which Cantonese speakers cannot follow in full. If you book a Yue interpreter we ask where the speaker is from and assign a Cantonese or Taishanese interpreter to match.

Do you have Taishanese interpreters as well as Cantonese ones?

Yes. Taishanese is the Yue language of the oldest Chinatown families and a Cantonese interpreter misses part of it, which matters in a medical history or under cross-examination. Several states certify Cantonese court interpreters; none certify Taishanese, so courts use a qualified Taishanese interpreter. We are a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor.

Do you have an office in Lexington?

No. Our only office is in New York. Yue translation is done remotely from a scan, so location makes no difference to the document work. For in-person interpreting in Lexington we assign a Yue interpreter who is based in or near the city, and phone or video interpreting is available anywhere in the United States.
