About Wenzhou Language

Wenzhou is a Wu Chinese variety spoken by around 5 million people in Wenzhou and surrounding parts of southeastern Zhejiang province. It's famously difficult for other Chinese speakers to understand — sometimes called "devil's language" in popular Chinese discourse. The US Wenzhou-speaking community is concentrated in New York City's Chinatown, where Wenzhouese have been a major business community since the 1980s, particularly in the leather, shoe, and import-export industries. Our Wenzhou translation work overlaps with general Chinese — civil documents are usually in written Mandarin.
