About the Wenzhou Language
Wenzhou is a Wu Chinese variety spoken by around 5 million people in Wenzhou and surrounding parts of southeastern Zhejiang province. It's famously difficult for other Chinese speakers to understand, sometimes called "devil's language" in popular Chinese discourse. The US Wenzhou-speaking community is concentrated in New York City's Chinatown, where Wenzhouese have been a major business community since the 1980s, particularly in the leather, shoe, and import-export industries.
