Urdu is Pakistan's national language, not everyone's first. Many people booked as Urdu speakers grew up in Punjabi, Pashto, Sindhi or Saraiki and use Urdu the way they used it at school. Pakistani applicants usually hold two versions of every record. NADRA issues computerised, bilingual Urdu and English certificates: the birth certificate, the Child Registration Certificate (the B-Form), the Family Registration Certificate and the Marriage Registration Certificate. Underneath those sit the Union Council originals, which are Urdu only and often handwritten. The marriage contract, the nikah nama, is the document that catches people out: a handwritten Urdu form of 25 numbered columns signed by the couple, their representatives, two witnesses and the nikah khwan, and for US immigration purposes it is submitted with its translation alongside the NADRA certificate, because neither on its own is treated as full proof of the marriage.
Nastaliq handwriting is the hard part. A Union Council clerk's Urdu is read by an Urdu translator who works in the script every day, not by someone who reads printed Urdu only, and every column is translated, including the dower terms and the conditions the couple struck out. Names then have to match the passport: Muhammad or Mohammad, Hussain or Husain. We follow the passport and note the variant on the original.

About the Urdu Language
Urdu is the national language of Pakistan and one of the official languages of India, with around 230 million speakers between them. It shares much of its spoken grammar with Hindi but is written in Perso-Arabic script (Nastaliq), and its formal vocabulary draws more heavily on Persian and Arabic. Do I need the nikah nama translated if I already have the NADRA marriage certificate?
For a US immigration filing, yes. The NADRA Marriage Registration Certificate is bilingual, but the handwritten Urdu nikah nama is the underlying contract, and the two are normally submitted together with a certified translation of the nikah nama. We translate all 25 columns and deliver it with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy.
