Urdu Interpreters in Cambridge

Our Urdu interpreters in Cambridge are professional, experienced linguists who work in state courts, hospitals and USCIS field offices, and every Urdu interpreting booking starts by checking which language the person thinks in.

Urdu is Pakistan's national language, not everyone's first. Many people booked as Urdu speakers grew up in Punjabi, Pashto, Sindhi or Saraiki and use Urdu the way they used it at school. For a routine appointment an Urdu interpreter is fine. For testimony or an asylum interview we ask which language the person thinks in, and whether the Urdu interpreter should be a woman, which for some patients decides whether they speak at all. Spoken Urdu and Hindi are close enough that a Hindi interpreter can cover a casual conversation, but not the formal register of a courtroom.

About 508,000 people speak Urdu at home on 2020 ACS figures, one of the fastest-growing languages in the country, with Texas and California among the states holding the largest communities. No national court interpreter oral exam exists for Urdu. California treats it as a registered language, tested by a written exam and oral proficiency exams in English and Urdu, and most other courts use a registered or otherwise qualified Urdu interpreter. Tell us the court and the case type and we confirm what it will accept. Any hospital that takes federal funding must supply an Urdu interpreter at no cost; elderly parents on visitor visas are the ones who need it. At USCIS the Urdu interpreter has to stay neutral, and an interpreter who explains a relative's answer has already done harm.

For an in-person assignment in Cambridge we assign an Urdu interpreter based in or near the city. Telephone and video interpreting can usually be arranged the same day. We serve courts, attorneys, hospitals, USCIS applicants and private individuals; we are a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor, and we say so up front.

Urdu Court, Medical and USCIS Interpreters in Cambridge

Prism Linguistics supplies experienced Urdu interpreters in Cambridge for court hearings, depositions, medical appointments and USCIS interviews, in person, by phone or by video, with a woman interpreter on request, and certified Urdu translation of the Pakistani records behind those cases.

Cambridge lies in Middlesex County, and its matters move through the Massachusetts Trial Court rather than any city bench: Cambridge District Court for criminal and civil cases, the Middlesex Probate and Family Court sitting in Cambridge, and Middlesex Superior Court for felonies and larger civil actions. Courts and attorneys engage Prism Linguistics chiefly for rare languages other providers cannot staff, and the same linguists support USCIS petitions and immigration filings.

Cambridge Public Schools names Spanish, Haitian Creole, Amharic, Arabic and Bengali as its priority languages for family translation and interpretation, and employs bilingual family liaisons for Amharic, Haitian Creole and Spanish. Harvard University and Mount Auburn Hospital generate academic and clinical work of their own. Prism's only office is in New York and its interpreters and translators work nationwide; when a hearing, deposition or medical appointment needs someone in the room, a linguist based in or near Cambridge is assigned.

Urdu to English Translation Services in Cambridge

Certified Urdu to English translation at Prism is handled by qualified Urdu translators who read handwritten Nastaliq as readily as printed NADRA text, each document delivered with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy.

Pakistani applicants usually hold two versions of every record. NADRA issues computerised, bilingual Urdu and English certificates: the birth certificate, the Child Registration Certificate (the B-Form), the Family Registration Certificate and the Marriage Registration Certificate. Underneath those sit the Union Council originals, which are Urdu only and often handwritten. The marriage contract, the nikah nama, is the document that catches people out: a handwritten Urdu form of 25 numbered columns signed by the couple, their representatives, two witnesses and the nikah khwan, and for US immigration purposes it is submitted with its translation alongside the NADRA certificate, because neither on its own is treated as full proof of the marriage.

Nastaliq handwriting is the hard part. A Union Council clerk's Urdu is read by an Urdu translator who works in the script every day, not by someone who reads printed Urdu only, and every column is translated, including the dower terms and the conditions the couple struck out. Names then have to match the passport: Muhammad or Mohammad, Hussain or Husain. We follow the passport and note the variant on the original.

Every certified Urdu translation is a complete, word-for-word rendering with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy, prepared to meet USCIS requirements. It is done from a clear scan, so a client in Cambridge gets the same translator, the same price and the same turnaround as one anywhere else in the country. About the Urdu Language

Urdu is the national language of Pakistan and one of the official languages of India, with around 230 million speakers between them. It shares much of its spoken grammar with Hindi but is written in Perso-Arabic script (Nastaliq), and its formal vocabulary draws more heavily on Persian and Arabic. For US-based clients we mainly translate Pakistani civil documents, birth certificates, marriage records (nikah nama), national ID cards, and educational diplomas, for USCIS family-reunification and academic-credential applications. Urdu-speaking communities in the US are concentrated in New York, New Jersey, Texas, Illinois, and Northern Virginia.

Urdu Interpreting in Cambridge: FAQs

Do I need the nikah nama translated if I already have the NADRA marriage certificate?

For a US immigration filing, yes. The NADRA Marriage Registration Certificate is bilingual, but the handwritten Urdu nikah nama is the underlying contract, and the two are normally submitted together with a certified translation of the nikah nama. We translate all 25 columns and deliver it with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy.

Are Urdu court interpreters certified?

There is no national certification exam in Urdu. California registers Urdu court interpreters after a written exam and oral proficiency tests in both languages, and other states use a registered or otherwise qualified Urdu interpreter. Tell us the court and the case type and we confirm what that court will accept before you book. We are a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor.

Do you have an office in Cambridge?

No. Our only office is in New York. Urdu translation is done remotely from a scan, so location makes no difference to the document work. For in-person interpreting in Cambridge we assign an Urdu interpreter who is based in or near the city, and phone or video interpreting is available anywhere in the United States.
