About Toishanese Language

Toishanese (Taishanese) is a Yue Chinese variety closely related to Cantonese, spoken by around 1.5 million people in Taishan and adjacent counties of Guangdong province. Historically Toishanese was the dominant language of the early Chinese-American community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries — most early Chinese migrants to the US, particularly Gold Rush and railroad-era arrivals, came from Taishan. The descendant US community is in San Francisco, Oakland, and New York City. Our Toishanese translation work overlaps with general Chinese — civil documents are usually in written Mandarin, with Toishanese being the spoken language for interpreting older Chinese-American community members.
