About Taiwanese Language

Taiwanese (Taiwanese Hokkien, Tai-gi) is a variety of Hokkien (Southern Min Chinese) spoken by around 15 million people in Taiwan — historically the language of the early Han Chinese settlers from southern Fujian, distinct from Mandarin and from mainland Hokkien. The US Taiwanese-American community is concentrated in California (San Gabriel Valley, the Bay Area), Houston, and parts of New Jersey and New York, with strong representation in tech, academia, and medicine. Our Taiwanese translation work overlaps with general Chinese — civil documents are usually in written Traditional Chinese characters, with Taiwanese being the spoken language for interpreting.
