About the Tabedawie Language

TaBedawie is the Beja language of the Red Sea hills, spoken across eastern Sudan and parts of Eritrea and Egypt. It is Cushitic rather than Semitic, so an Arabic interpreter is not a substitute, a point worth raising early because it is a common and consequential assumption. Documents from the region arrive in Arabic, so translation work is Arabic. Beja is needed for interpreting, almost always in asylum and refugee resettlement settings, and interpreters take time to source.

  • Primary regions: Sudan
