About the Somali Language

The largest Somali-American community in the United States is in Minneapolis-Saint Paul — by some counts the biggest Somali community outside Somalia itself — with further significant populations in Columbus, Seattle, San Diego, and Atlanta. Somali has around 17 million native speakers across Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Kenya. The translation work we do is almost entirely USCIS asylum and refugee paperwork, family-reunification petitions, school enrolment documents, and the healthcare consent forms that come with a young, growing community. Somali is written in the Latin alphabet — a relatively recent standardisation, from the early 1970s.

  • Primary regions: Somalia, diaspora
  • Language origin / family: Horn of Africa
  • Estimated speakers: 16 million
